(excerpts from Globe and Mail ...)
$1.4-billion for policing, border security and public safety
$200-million for the RCMP
$100-million for armed border presence
$490: the new immigrant landing fee, from $975, effective today (may 2)
$450-million for aboriginal communities
"For defence, the federal government said it would increase the National
Defence budget base by $5.3-billion over five years, with that money earmarked
for a range of areas including equipment spending, acceleration of recruitment
and an increase Canada's capacity to protect Arctic sovereignty."
"The government also confirmed $2.2-billion has been set aside for residential
schools settlements with aboriginal people and said other measures would
include $450-million to improving education and socio-economic conditions for
aboriginal women, children and families. But, the government also said it would
consult with aboriginal leaders and the provinces and territories "to develop a
new approach" to targets set at last fall's first ministers meeting in Kelowna,
but didn't commit to funding for the $5-billion, five-year plan."
