2. Day of Action to End Canadian Support for Israeli Apartheid

---------------------------------------
Saturday February the 18th
1 PM March and Rally
Dundas and Yonge (Dundas Square)
----------------------------------------

The Arab Students' collective is holding its second Israeli Apartheid Week from February 12th 18th in order to develop the understanding of Israel as an apartheid state and to build a boycott, divestment, and sanctions movement against Israeli apartheid. The Israeli apartheid regime continues
to deny Palestinian refugees to return to their stolen lands; continues to systematically discriminate against its Palestinian citizens, continues to entrench the walls dividing the Palestinians of the West Bank and Gaza into open air prison Bantustans, and continues to imprison over 8000 Palestinians at any time. The Palestinian people have continued to resist apartheid, and it is time for people in Canada and all over the world to stand with them.

In the spirit of the South African anti-Apartheid movement, over 170 Palestinian civil society organizations issued a call to the rest of the world last July, to boycott, divest from and sanction Israel. The Palestinian demands were that these non-violent punitive measures should be maintained until Israel meets its obligation to recognize the Palestinian people's inalienable right to self-determination and fully complies with the precepts of international law by:

1. Ending its occupation and colonization of all Arab lands and Dismantling the Wall;

2. Recognizing the fundamental rights of the Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel to full equality; and

3. Respecting, protecting and promoting the rights of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes and properties as stipulated in UN resolution 194.

Inspired by the struggle of South Africans against apartheid, and by the unity of the Palestinian people behind these demands, and in the spirit of international solidarity, moral consistency and resistance to injustice and oppression, campaigns to isolate the Israeli apartheid regime have spread world-wide. The movement has spread across US universities and faith groups; Norwegian political parties and Italian companies. In Canada we see the movement for solidarity with Palestine based upon the call to divest being taken in Quebec by trade Unions and women's organizations and teachers unions under the banner of the Coalition for Justice and Peace in Palestine. The time to do the same in the rest of Canada is now.

Canada, regardless what party has holds power, is among the largest supporters of the Israeli apartheid regime. The Canadian Israeli Free Trade Agreement has grossed over 10 billion dollars since 1997 with contracts by Nortel of 70 million dollars to improve the Israeli Air Force telecommunications, the Canadian Highways Infrastructure Corporation which has a contract with Israel to build the Cross-Israel highway which completes the Israeli matrix of control in order to link settler-only roads in the west bank to the rest of Israel. Israeli wines are being carried and sold in government controlled liquor stores across Canada, and Israeli corporations like Amdocs and El Al area allowed free reign to operate in Canada. This can only be done with the political support of the Canadian government this is why we are calling for a movement that will target such institutions, and demand that the Canadian government follow its obligations under international law, and institute policies for divestment and sanctions against Israeli apartheid at the Federal, Provincial and Municicpal levels.

It is in light of all of this that the Arab Students' Collective, a member group of the Coalition Against Israeli Apartheid have called for a day of action on February 18 to launch such a campaign for boycott, divestment and sanctions.
