Canadian pipe project faces no-pay, no-play policy
Dene communities want access fees, benefits before okaying Mackenzie line
EDMONTON -- The Mackenzie Valley pipeline project still doesn`t have all
the support it needs from aboriginals in the Northwest Territories,
according to Globe and Mail.
"We hear `em clawing at the door, but we`re not ready yet," said Deh Cho
Grand Chief Herb Norwegian, leader of Dene communities that straddle the
southern half of the proposed 1,220-kilometre pipeline route.
Some aboriginal groups have indicated they are willing to sign on to the
$7-billion natural gas project.
A $31.5-million out-of-court settlement in July of a Deh Cho lawsuit
against federal and Northwest Territoriesagencies did not soften Dene
concerns about harm to northern land and water, he said.
The 13 Dene and Metis communities in the 200,000-square-kilometre Deh
Cho region haven`t been converted by a federal promise of $500-million
for northern native aid or Deputy Prime Minister Anne McLellan`s pledge
last week of up to $2.8-billion in project assistance.
