Summer Work Opportunity - 2 QPIRG Summer Stipends!!!!
The Quebec Public Interest Research Group at McGill is a non-profit,
student-run organization that conducts research, education, and action
on environmental and social justice issues at McGill University and in
the Montreal community. QPIRG's summer stipend is intended to provide
individuals with a budget/honorarium of $3,000 to work over the summer
doing research leading towards action and change within the Montreal
community. We encourage all interested individuals to apply!
Successful applicants will convince the selection committee that
(1) their project fits into QPIRG's mandate to promote social and
environmental justice;
(2) the research will be useful, and won't just sit on a shelf when
it's done; and
(3) the applicant has appropriate experience and can be reasonably
expected to meet these
goals.
Applicants who are prepared to commit to a year-long campaign
with a specific action-oriented goal or set of action-oriented goals
in the public interest will be favoured.
Examples of past summer stipends:
* Publishing School Schmool, an activist's guide to McGill
* Setting up an internship program and writing a training manual for
the students to get involved in community economic development
* Organizing and running WAVES (Women Active Vocal Effective Strong), a
summer day program for teenage girls
* Writing a manual for high school teachers on incorporating queer
issues into the curriculum
* Producing a documentary film on the fight against the Live-In
Caregiver Program (LCP) that now acts as an educational tool for
community and labour organizers
* Organizing a bilingual walking tour of Montreal's southwest
neighbourhood that aimed to draw out the history of struggle in this
neighbourhood and highlight present day battles against gentrification
For the application, please include
* A letter of introduction that outlines the objectives of your
project, the needs
it addresses, and how it fulfills the above criteria. (MAX: 2 Pages)
* A resume with two references
* In a third seperate document, include
(1) a timeline that shows clear goals for the summer, as well as
the follow up action period.
(2) a budget of estimated expenses for the project (i.e. long
distance calls, material purchases, travel, etc.). Please keep
in mind
that the $3000 stipend is meant to cover both the estimated project
expenses and an honorarium for the project coordinator(s).
