Two compelling NFB documentaries screen
at Cinema du Parc in April
Two high calibre socially oriented documentaries will be screened at Cinema
du Parc in April. The films, * Mohawk Girls* and * No More Tears
Sister*will run from Friday, April 14th till Wednesday April 18th.
With insight, humour and compassion, Tracey Deer's * Mohawk Girls* takes us
inside the lives of three teenagers as they tackle the same issues of
identity, culture and family that the director herself faced a decade
earlier. Shot over two years, and interspersed with home videos from Deer's
own adolescence, * Mohawk Girls* provides a surprising inside look at modern
Aboriginal youth culture. Produced by Adam Symansky (NFB) and by Christina
Fon and Joanne Robertson (Rezolution Pictures International).
* No More Tears Sister* (directed by Helene Klodawsky) is a story of love,
revolution, and betrayal that explores the price of truth in times of war.
Set during the violent ethnic conflict that has enveloped Sri Lanka over
decades, the documentary recreates the courageous and vibrant life of
renowned human rights activist, Dr. Rajani Thiranagama. Mother, anatomy
professor, and symbol of hope, Rajani was assassinated at the age of
thirty-five. Stunningly photographed, using rare archival footage, intimate
correspondence and poetic recreations, the story of Rajani and her family
delves into rarely explored themes - revolutionary women and their dangerous
pursuit of justice. Written and directed by Helene Klodawsky and produced by
Pierre Lapointe (NFB).

The symbols of social order--the police, the bugle calls in the barracks,
the military parades and the waving flags--are at one and the same time
inhibitory and stimulating; for they do not convey the message "Don't dare
to budge"; rather, they cry out "Get ready to attack."
