Dear Hawaiian activists and others,
Last Wednesday, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) held their public
meeting on the proposed Honolulu irradiation facility. Some opponents of the
plan, largely from Hawaiian environmental groups, showed up to voice
objections to the proposal, and to raise important questions. The meeting
started off with presentations by NRC officials, the irradiator-manufacturer
Gray*Star, and Michael Kohn of Pa'ina Hawai'i, the company that would own
the facility. Opponents said that the presentations were essentially "a dog
and pony show", and that not much specific information on the proposal was
provided. Two particular concerns raised by irradiator opponents at the
meeting were that an environmental assessment- currently not planned- is
important, and that the site planned for the irradiator may be in a tsunami
inundation zone.

What Can You Do?

Sign the online petition objecting to the planned cobalt-60 irradiator at:
http://www.demaction.org/dia/organizations/publiccitizen/petition.jsp?petition_KEY=114

Then forward the petition to your friends!

Additionally, the magazine Environment Hawai'i has several in-depth articles
on the irradiator in the September issue. Disturbingly, one article details
violations issued to the now-closed University of Hawaii cobalt-60
irradiator because it was left unlocked and unguarded multiple times, in one
particular instance so that the professor in charge could go to the gym
without waiting around to let the electrician in. So much for strict
security! If you are interested in reading these articles, you can either
subscribe online at: http://www.environment-hawaii.org or request a free
sample issue.
