all the women, including chickie, sonia and bertha, were found not guilty on
all charges. all the men were found guilty. robert & gary gabriel and five
others i don't know were found guilty of both forcibile confinement and
riot, and will appeal the conviction. terry (rita's son), allistair (janet's
brother) and chickie's nefew all got the unlawful assembly charges. pascal
told me last night he will write up a report to post including a criticism
of the coverage.

Un premier verdict pour les Mohawks de Kanesatake

Samedi matin, à Saint-Jérôme, le verdict est tombé pour les 19 Mohawks
accusées dans le cadre des événements de janvier 2004 à Kanesatake.
Le jury a reconnu sept des accusés, dont Robert Gabriel, coupables de
participation à une émeute et de séquestration. Six autres personnes ont été
condamnées pour avoir participé à un attroupement illégal.

Robert Gabriel, malgré le verdict, se réjouit d'avoir saboté
l'opération policière du grand chef, son cousin.

Les personnes coupables de séquestration risquent 10 ans de prison, celles
ayant participé à une émeute, deux ans. La sentence sera connue le 13
décembre prochain.
En revanche, six des individus incriminés ont été acquittés. Ils étaient
accusés d'avoir encerclé le poste de police du territoire mohawk et d'avoir
participé à une émeute.

Toute l'affaire remonte à janvier 2004. Le 12 de ce mois, une soixantaine de
policiers autochtones ont pris le contrôle du poste de police de Kanesatake,
à la demande du grand chef James Gabriel. Celui-ci souhaitait mettre fin au
crime organisé sévissant sur le territoire.
Une partie de la population a aussitôt réagi en séquestrant les policiers,
bloqués dans le bâtiment pendant près de 48 heures.

La maison de James Gabriel a entièrement brûlé

Les événements ont dégénéré en contestation violente de la politique de
James Gabriel. Sa maison a été incendiée, et il a dû quitter le territoire.
L'affaire a été entendue devant la Cour supérieure du Québec. Deux personnes
doivent encore subir un procès en 2006. Ils sont accusés d'avoir causé
l'incendie de la résidence de l'ancien grand chef.
