Salut tout le monde,
there will be a demonstration AGAINST industrial pigfarms in Québec and
FOR a real and complete moratorium of the pigfarm industry until the
government applies effective measures to protect the Québécois-es from the
massive destruction of our environment.
This demonstration is in solidarity with L'Union Paysanne - a Québec union
actively involved in many issues related to agriculture over here: food
sovereinty, sustainable agriculture, political consideration of paysans,
... They are currently trying to offer an alternative to Québec's official
agriculturalist (which are in fact agro-industrialists) union, l'Union des
Producteur$ Agricoles (UPA), which is a huge lobby towards the government
and pro-pigfarms.
Pigfarms have large scale consequences over here ranging from
contamination of the Fleuve Saint-Laurent (the water you are drinking
every day) and other major water bodies in the province, exhaustion of
land productivity, releasing of significant amount of methane (which is a
greenhouse gas), eutrophisation (algae bloom) of lakeshores to the
concentration of money and power in the hands of a few (i.e.- we are going
back to a feodal land system).
In fact, in a memorandum on pig industry from the Bureau d'Audiance
Publique sur l'Environnement (BAPE; Office of public audience on the
environment), the Association Médical du Québec (medical association) let
us aware to be prepared for risks of a wide-spread poisonning tragedy;
let's be precautious and avoid a Walkerton-II.
We are meeting at two steps from McGill at the corner of McGill College
and Sherbrooke at about 11:30 am.
En espérant vous voir réagir à nos côtés,
Simon-Pierre
