:: CALL FOR ARTISTS
The First People's House, the Native Friendship Center of Montreal, and
CKUT 90.3fm are seeking your artistic contribution for promotional
material reflecting on this year's events being planned around the 15th
anniversary of July 11th, 1990.
July 11th, 2005, will mark the passing of fifteen years since the
territorial defense of Kanehsatake erupted into news headlines
worldwide. What came to be called the Oka Crisis defined the
political, social, and cultural realities of communities living within and
around Kanehsatake, including those neighbors in Montreal and
Kanhawake. Like so many contemporary issues, media coverage has defined
and continues to define how the events of 1990 are remembered and
understood. What is also clear is that the media coverage of these
historical events is highly saturated with myths and stereotypes.
This year, the First People's House and CKUT Radio McGill are working in
collaboration with the Indigenous People's Solidarity Movement (based at
QPIRG-McGill) and the Native Friendship Center of Montreal, to create a
series of events that offer a common reflection on the summer of 1990.
These events include an art installation on McGill's quad as well as video
presentations and speakers at McGill (on Monday, July 11th), the First
People's House (beginning of June), and the Native Friendship Center of
Montreal (Friday, July 8th). These activities are aimed at dissecting
media myths around the Oka Crisis as well as challenging the prevalent
attitudes with which these events are regarded.
