A gathering to remember the territorial defense of Kanehsatake 15-years
later hosted by the First People's House and CKUT Radio of McGill
University in collaboration with the Indigenous People's Solidarity
Movement (based at QPIRG-McGill) and the Native Friendship Center of
Montreal.

July 11, 2005 will mark the passing of fifteen years since the
territorial defense of Kanehsatake erupted into news headlines
worldwide. What came to be called the "Oka Crisis" defined the
political, social, and cultural realities of communities living within and
around Kanehsatake, including those neighbors in Montreal and
Kanhawake. Like so many contemporary issues, media coverage has defined
and continues to define how the events of 1990 are imagined and
understood. What is also clear is that the media coverage of these
historical events is highly saturated with myths and stereotypes.

This year, events being planned include an art installation on McGill's
greenspace as well as video presentations and speakers at McGill and the
Native Friendship Center of Montreal. These activities are aimed at
dissecting media myths around the "Oka Crisis" as well as challenging the
prevalent attitudes with which these events are regarded.

THURSDAY, July 7th, at Native Friendship Center of Montreal (2001 Saint
Laurent Blvd, corner Ontario, Metro St. Laurent) from 5pm to 9pm,
including a Community Dinner plus video and speaker presentations on Youth
Reflections on the Summer of 1990.

MONDAY, July 11th, at McGill University (Sheerbrooke and McGill College,
Metro McGill) from Noon to 9pm, including an art installation, music,
food, films, and speaker presentations on Native history and education,
plus reflections on the Summer of 1990 throughout the day.
