This territory is also, due to it being "prime caribou range (calving
grounds), is essential to the survival of the Gwitch'in people, now slated
for cultural obliteration by drill bit.Caribou are incredibly timid, if the
area is disturbed at all, they won't return for years, leaving a people who
often still survive off the largest animal herds left on Turtle Island,
without their way of life.

But at least we got the oil, so it must be worth it.

WHITEHORSE - Citing a need for domestic energy, the U.S. government plans to
open thousands of hectares of Alaska's North Slope for exploratory drilling .
The land, home to nesting areas for migratory birds and prime caribou range,
has been protected for decades.

The Bureau of Land Management has concluded that oil and gas exploration in
the northeastern corner of the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska can be
conducted with ``minimal impact'' on the area's wildlife.

While most of the reserve is open to oil development, its northeastern
corner has been declared off-limits dating back to the Reagan
administration, because of environmental concerns.

That area is also viewed as having the highest oil and gas potential within
the reserve.

Interior Secretary Gale Norton is expected to sign off on the BLM's
recommendation next week.

The government estimates the area contains about two billion barrels of
economically recoverable oil.
