of Maikanch, in India's Kashipur region. Their orders: to search for and
arrest targeted "leaders" of a peoples' rally that had taken place the
day before.

lucrative mining project by the Utkal Consortium - owned in part by ALCAN
of Canada - on the sacred land of the Adivasi (indigenous) and Dalit
(lower-caste) People of Kashipur.

and destruction of their ancestral land by a foreign corporation was

consentement de la population locale pour commencer la construction. En
même temps, Alcan refuse d'admettre l'existence de nombreuses
déclarations d'opposition au projet signées par les élus locaux, ainsi
qu'une motion passée en conseil de bande exigeant l'abandon complet du
projet.

>TREIZE ANNÉE DE RÉSISTANCE
>Au cours des treize dernières années, la résistance populaire au projet à
réussi à empêcher la compagnie de commencer la construction. Néanmoins,
au cours de la dernière année, la Compagnie et ses alliés au sein du
gouvernement d'Orissa ont de nouveau recouru à la violence pour réprimer
le mouvement populaire d'opposition au projet.

>Depuis que le Ministre en Chef d'Orissa a ordonné la « suppression de
toute activité anti-mine » dans la région, en novembre 2004, des
>rassemblements populaires ont été brutalement attaqués par la police. Des
« meneurs » présumés ont été violentés et emprisonnés en vertu
>d'accusations truquées, alors que les villageois opposés à la mine et les
ONG locales sont soumis à un harcèlement politique systématique. Toute la
région est essentiellement sous occupation policière.
