Research Assistant
Indigenous Perspectives to Consultation and Decision-Making about Mining
and
Other Natural Resources on Ancestral Lands in Latin America, the Caribbean
and
Canada
The North-South Institute is seeking a research assistant to provide
logistical
and research support to Phase II of its multi-country project, Indigenous
Perspectives to Consultation and Decision-Making about Mining and Other
Natural
Resources on Ancestral Lands in Latin America, the Caribbean and Canada. A
description of the project and project documents for Phase I (2000-2002) can
be
found at http://www.nsi-ins.ca/ensi/research/completed40.html. Phase II
(2004-2007) is entitled Towards Capacity-Building, Dialogue and Policy
Change, and will include components in Suriname, Guyana, Colombia and
potentially Peru, with some Canada-based and international activities.
Ideally, the research assistant would be bilingual (Spanish, English); able
to
commit to providing research and logistical support on a part-time (and
slightly sporadic) basis for key activities that will take place over the 3
years of Phase II; and have knowledge of the issues around Indigenous rights
and natural resources internationally. Experience working with First Nations
is
an asset.
The Research Assistant will provide research and
organizational/administrative
support for:
? An evaluation of Aboriginal participation in Canadas Whitehorse Mining
Initiative (and its replications in S.Africa and Brazil) and subsequent
multi-party processes in Canada
? A launch meeting for the international project that will likely take
place in Ottawa in mid-2005, and a back-to-back international team meeting
? The production of information bulletins to update partners and donors
on project activities
? The development of a potential Peruvian component and a (more fully
developed) Canadian component
? Reviews of partner documents as they are produced
? Monitoring developments in the field of Indigenous Peoples, natural
resources and mining, particularly in Canada and LAC
? Developing related proposals that will feed into NSIs work on
Communities, Conflict and Collaboration
We are offering a one-year contract (with possibility of renewal) for a 2
day/week position (and unlimited volunteer hours, for those so inclined!),
starting beginning of December, 2004. The work schedule will vary, with more
days allotted around the key activities. Remuneration will be $18-$20/hour.
Possibility of some travel.
Please send CVs and letters of interest by Monday, October 4, 2004 to:
