MONDAY: Support local activist Pat Cadorette: An appeal for courtroom
solidarity
Last July 30, 2003, a Montreal courtroom was packed in support of an
activist arrested at the anti-WTO protests, who was enduring an absurd
bail hearing. A disruption erupted when courtroom observers vocally
objected to the outrageous conditions of release being imposed by the
judge. Dexter X, a local activist, was manhandled during the ruckus
outside the courtroom, and suffocated by courtroom guards to such an
extent that he lost consciousness. Various courtroom observers saw what
was happening and intervened to help Dexter (who would eventually be
released by the guards without charge).
One of those people involved in the ruckus, Pat Cadorette, was
subsequently arrested and charged for his participation in the melee. Pat
is a dedicated local organizer and media activist, involved in various
projects, including the CMAQ.
Pat intervened last July in solidarity with Dexter, and was attending
court in solidarity with arrested activists. Now, Pat needs our
solidarity, as he deals with the serious criminal proceedings against him.
Pat will be in court this MONDAY, November 1st at the Palais de Justice
(corner of St-Laurent and Notre-Dame). The trial will be in courtroom
4,12, starting at 9:30am. Please come early, before 9:30am, to wish Pat
well, and to make sure he knows we stand in solidarity with him as he
deals with the legal aftermath of the melee in court on July 30, 2003.
If you can't come to court, please phone other you think might be able to
attend in support. Also, send your messages of support to
lombrenoire at tao.ca; your notes of solidarity will be passed on to Pat.
Donations to Pat's legal defence fund are also appreciated; e-mail for
more information.
