The State of Dissent in Israel and Palestine:
A Presentation and Discussion
with
Yael Barda, Israeli Human Rights Lawyer

Tuesday, October 12th 6:00 P.M.
McGill Thomson House Ballroom 3650 McTavish
sponsored by the Jewish Alliance Against the Occupation

Yael Barda, 28, is a practicing human rights lawyer in
Israel. Born in
NYC and raised in West Jerusalem, she represents
political activists and
free speech cases in Israel. Barda recently represented
Eva Jasievicz, a
British reporter who was denied entry to Israel on the
grounds of
journalistic bias. She also successfully petitioned
the supreme court of
Israel to overturn the official censorship of the film
“Jenin Jenin”.

In 1997, she founded "Mahapach," Israel's largest
grassroots student
movement, working with disempowered Jewish and
Palestinian communities in
direct action campaigns for civil and environmental
rights. She teaches
public campaigning at the Human Rights Division of the
Ramat Gan College
of Law and gives seminars on non-violence and direct
action. Her first
book of poems, "Planet Israel," will be published in
Summer 2005.

Ms. Barda will give an overview of the state of dissent
in Israel,
covering current actions against the occupation and
campaigns for social
and economic reform. She offers valuable reflections
on the growth of
solidarity movements between Israelis, Palestinians,
and international
activists.
