URGENT CALL FOR SUPPORT AND ACTION
CIRCULATE WIDELY
Tensions and fear in Kanehsatake of a violent SQ and RCMP incusion to back
Gabriel's militia, are at a all-time high. Despite repeated attempts and
requests for face-to-face negotiation and mediation, both levels of
government are intent on putting their paramilitary police forces onto the
Mohawks of Kanehsatake.
This afternoon the women of Kanhesatake led a caravan of vehicles marching
up the hill to the Pines, to read a statement outlining their clear demands
for a Mohawk-to-Mohawk community-based peaceful resolution. A 91 year old
elder recalled the brutal death of her grandfather at the hands of RCMP
offciers in 1926, and vowed that community members would not allow RCMP
aggression. Shortly after their women finished their press statement,
community residents spotted RCMP Armoured Personnel Carriers on flatbed
transport trucks 10 kms outside of the village of Oka. Is this Canada's idea
of a peaceful resolution?
Kanehsatake residents urgently request your presence to prevent bloodshed
and bring federally sponsored aggression to a halt, in order to bring about
a peaceful negotiation process -- one not under the gun.
What to Bring:
- Visual and audio recording equipment
- Materials for placards and banners
- Tents and sleeping bags.
Directions from Montreal to Kanehsatake:
Take 40West to 13North to 640West to 344West, through the village of Oka
into Kanehsatake, near the Pines.
IF YOU CAN'T COME OUT TO KANEHSATAKE
we urge you to call government authorities and demand that they respect the
wishes of Kanehsatake community members for a Mohawk-to-Mohawk peaceful
resolution without the use of state intervention and armed aggression.
