translate this message into french?)
Dear friends and allies,
We are writing with regards to the current situation in Kanehsatake. It is
expected that the RCMP and the Surete du Quebec (SQ) will try to force their
way into Kanehsatake in the near future, possibly later Thursday morning.
Over the past month, several attempts have been made by Grand Chief James
Gabriel's new police force to enter the community, but they have been
repelled by members of the Kanehsatake community. As tensions mount, Quebec
Public Security Minister Jacques Chagnon has announced the the RCMP and the
SQ will be leading an operation to help Gabriel's police force begin
patrolling the Kanehsatake community.
Several members of the community who are opposed to any police/military
intervention into Kanehsatake have requested concrete support from people in
the area. In particular, it has been requested that solidarity activists be
present in Kanehsatake as soon as possible. Especially needed are people who
can drive (and who have a car) to bring people to and from Montreal and
Kanehsatake. As well, camcorders, cameras, auido devices, and cell-phones
are needed to help witness, document and publicize the police intervention.
In order to coordinate travelling to Kanehsatake, you can either contact the
Indigenous Peoples Solidarity Movement at ipsm at resist.ca, or you can call
QPIRG-Concordia (during the day, ask for Pauline) at 848-7585.
In addition, on Sunday morning, a group of bicyclists will be riding in a
Critical Mass from the train station in Deux Montagnes to Kanehsatake. For
more information, you can contact Gretchen (gretchen at taktic.org or
398.6788), or you can read the e-mail attached below.
If you are unable to go to Kanehsatake, your support is still important.
Actions may be planned in Montreal, all depending on what happens as the
situation develops. As well, with several members of the Kanehsatake
community facing charges in court, in particular for demonstrating outside
of the Kanehsatake police office in mid-January, legal costs are already
adding up. Some interest has been expressed from within the community that
supporters set up a legal fund to help pay for those costs. Finally, you
can send messages of support to kanehsatake_indymedia at sympatico.ca.
For more information, please e-mail the Indigenous Peoples Solidarity
Movement at ipsm at resist.ca, or leave a voice mail message at 398-3323.

getting to kanehsatake?
it's a 60mins plus ride from the 2-mts train station to kanehsatake. we
could mass there at 11am (hold a press scrum while we mass) and journey on.
those leaving from montreal could converge in laval at cote vertu metro
(near decarie) and ride through or (and others) could converage at the
canora train station on the blue atm (near jean
talon) and leave en masse by train.
the bike path a kilometer away or so. we can also plan CM on the road (as
the bike path probably meandors, does anyone know?).
details to be confirmed, but our arrival could be for 11am at 2-mts and NOON
in kanehsatake.
why ride out on sunday?
something needs to happen to bring people to kanehsatake and this is one
opportunity to bring much needed solidarity.
