The (McGill) Aboriginal Students' Network was approved for interim
status as an SSMU club in mid-February. This is just a message
to get information about ASN and other related events while we
are waiting for a formal SSMU e-mail address.
Membership in the ASN is open to anyone and costs $2. For more
info, and a copy of the constitution, please reply to

The First Peoples' House (FPH) is at 3505 Peel,
just south of Dr. Penfield.
1. March 11, Thursday, 1:30-2:30pm. First Peoples' House.
Finding our Talk: the preservation of Native Languages. FPH.
Three speakers talk about their work to preserve and promote
their native languages.
2. March 11, Thursday, 6pm. 302-3480 McTavish (Shatner Building).
Queer Spirituality: Where do we fit in? A discussion of queer
identity and its place in spirituality and religion, including
a talk on two-spirit identity. Part of Queer McGill Pride weeks
(www.ssmu.mcgill.ca/queer).
3. Friday, March 12, 1:45-3:30pm. First Peoples' House.
As Long as the Rivers Flow: Grassy Narrows Update.
Film screening and discussion by Grassy Narrows youth
of the defense of traditional Anishnaabe territory
against clear-cutting by Abitibi Consolidated. Presented by
the IPSM, FPH, ASN, and support of McGill Chaplaincy.
4. Friday, March 12, 7pm. 1710 Beaudry
The Roots of War: 500 years of Indigenous Resistance
opening panel discussion of the "Words are Weapons" teach-in
against war. Chrissy Swain, Ashley Loon, Warrem Ashopenace,
and Chantell Swain (Grassy Narrows youth) and Joane Bourget
(nurse on Inuit land) and Clifton Nicholas. Presented by the
IPSM, with co-sponsor CKUT.
5. Monday March 22.
Sisters in Spirit. The Native Women's Association of Canada
launches a one-year campaign to lobby the federal government
to establish a $10 million fund for research and education
related to violence against Aboriginal women.
Watch for supporting events.
6. Thursday, March 25, 5-7pm. First Peoples' House.
Vernissage and discussion by artists of "What is Native Art?"
Artists include Marion Snow, Martin Loft, Kiya Kelley and
Ellen Gabriel. Art show continues to April 15.
7. March 26, Friday, 4-6pm. First Peoples' House.
"Animating the Object", part of QPIRG Social Justice Reading
Series. Discussion of Native art and identity in reference
to the articles "In the Red" (Joane Cardinal-Schubert) and
"Stop Stealing Native Stories" by Lenore Keeshig-Tobias.
Facilitated by members of the ASN. Readings available at
QPIRG McGill, 3647 University.
8. Ongoing.
The Aboriginal Students' Network is meeting to organize events
