Kanehsatake on high alert after Feds suggest
Assault on the hill could be imminent.
Translation of French T.V. broadcasts last night reported that Denis
Coderre, the federal point man on Kanehsatake, said that an assault on
the hill could be coming within 24 hours. This after James Gabriel was
quoted in Le Journal yesterday saying he wanted to return home. Chief
John Harding advised Gabriel that he needed to step back and reflect and
give the community a chance to recover from everything that it's gone
through. Although Harding added that the community would likely be
prepared to receive Gabriel should he relinquish all political capacity
and motivation.
While the community remains ready to defend itself against further
attempts at invasion, this latest threat comes at a rather peculiar time.
As Kanehsatakes electoral officer prepares to set an election date in
accordance with all proper protocol, one would think the Federal
Government, in the midst of its own election period no less, would refrain
from running interference in a peoples right to choose their own
leadership.
As Kanehsatake readies itself once again, it asks that all those who have
shown the community support and solidarity over the past weeks and months
prepare themselves also, in the case of an attempted invasion. At this
time people are being asked to make those arrangements that would allow
for immediate response should it be deemed necessary. Further updates to
this rapidly developing situation will be made as information becomes
available.
For more information, please phone Chief Harding at 514.809.4799.
