Call for Artists/Curators/Discussants
Please reply by email by Friday, October 1, 2004
SAVAC and TRIBE are collaborating on an art project in recognition of our
similar status as artist-run-centres without a gallery space, serving
specific communities. SAVAC supports South Asian artists and TRIBE supports
Aboriginal artists. (Please see our organizations' mandate/mission below)
Through panel discussions that take place between October 2004 and March
2005, artists, cultural theorists and other members of our communities will
develop the building blocks of an ongoing relationship and dialogue between
both organizations and communities. This will culminate in an art project
and/or exhibition of Aboriginal and South Asian artists (September
2005/October 2005).
To help us cast a wide net of potential participants we have produced a
series of questions for your consideration. Answer all, or some, or none.
Add
your own questions or proposals.
Reply and cc to SAVAC (info at savac.net) and TRIBE (tribe.inc at sasktel.net) on

SAVAC is a Toronto-based, artist-run, nonprofit organization dedicated to
the development and presentation of new works in contemporary visual arts by
artists of South Asian* origin. SAVAC does not have a permanent gallery. As
a collective, we produce exhibitions, an international lecture series, and
educational projects in collaboration with artist-run-centres, museums,
educational institutions and community organizations to integrate South
Asian artists in the contemporary art sector. We promote the work of
emerging artists, and expose Canada to the work of leading international
artists, critics and curators. By critically engaging in artistic and
curatorial practice, SAVAC seeks to achieve an international reputation for
excellence in programming for diverse audiences.
*South Asians are people who can trace their ancestry back to countries of
the Indian subcontinent: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri
Lanka.
Tribe exists to provide opportunities for Aboriginal artists and curators to
participate fully in the contemporary arts movement.
Mission Statement
Tribe is dedicated to the development of independent venues where Aboriginal
media, visual and performing artists can develop, create and present a
variety of art forms on a consistent and scheduled program. Tribes mission
includes the following:
- To further develop art practices, self-promotion and self-management; and
- To strengthen and enrich the Aboriginal arts community locally and
nationally.
- To organize and deliver professional development resources to the
Aboriginal arts community.
