Press Release:
An elderly man (65), Willard Pipeboy/Sicangu Lakota and his son Keya
(16)were detained at the Canadian border at 7:46 central time July 25th.
Their plans were to attend the Sundance ceremony on the Birdtail Reserve
in Canada. The Greyhound bus that they were traveling on was stopped at
the border near Pembina. The Customs Officer boarded the bus and of all
the
people riding the bus, the officer knowingly went right to Mr. Pipeboy and
his son and asked them to exit the bus. The other passengers were allowed
to the cross the border. Mr.Pipeboy and his son were detained. The
reasons
for detaining them were as follows
1. Mr.Pipeboy was a member of the American Indian Movement (1960-1970).
2. His records revealed he had been incarcerated. (Simply living on a
reservation is a form of Incarceration) These border incidents are
persistent occurrences that happen to Indigenous people perpetrated by the
Nations of Canada and United States. The issue of Homeland Security and
Diplomatic Agreements has gone beyond reasonable protocol. Native Nations
who reside in Canada and United States have always understood that they
could pass and repass freely without confrontation.

We the family have become familiar with the enforcement of policies and the
negative attitudes perpetrated by officers. We are also familiar with
International Laws and Declaration of Human Rights. Violations have
occurred that demand recognition of the rights of Native People. Both the
Nations of Canada and the United States are to be held legally responsible
for their actions.

1.) Racial Profiling
2.) Racism
3.) Discrimination
4.) Denial of Religious Freedom
5.) Elder-Abuse
6.) Violation of Jay Treaty Nov. 19 1794 Art.III
"It is agreed that it shall at all times be free to the Indians dwelling
on either side of the said boundary line freely to pass and repass by
land or inland navigation into the respective territories and countries
of
the two parties on the continent of America and to navigate all the lakes,
rivers and waters thereof and freely to carry on trade and commerce with
each other nor shall the Indians passing or repassing with their own
proper-goods and effects of whatever nature, pay for the same any impost
or duty whatsoever."

Willard's family is looking to have International law invoked in this case
involving the US and Canada, to call attention to the continuing abuses
Native people face every day.

To offer legal assistance with this case, please contact Darlene Pipeboy
at wicasa at tnics.com .

They will make it to Sundance to pray for the People. The time has come to
draw attention to the fact that Native people are treated very differently
here in their Native Country. All help is most appreciated.
