KANESATAKE MOHAWK TERRITORY, April 16 /CNW Telbec/ - Chiefs PearlBonspille, 
Steve Bonspille and John Harding welcome the personal assistance ofthe 
National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations, Phil Fontaine, to help 
resolve the policing crisis in Kanesatake Mohawk Territory, 
Kanesatake,Quebec. The National Chief had appointed Roger Augustine to start 
discussionswith representatives of the Mohawk Community and representatives 
of JamesGabriel.On Saturday April 10th, 2004, Roger Augustine came to 
Kanesatake and metwith some community members at the reserve checkpoints. He 
then toured thecommunity and met with us and other representatives of the 
Community.Mr. Augustine strongly recommended that a mediator be brought in 
to helpresolve the crisis. He suggested Mr. Ralph Brant, a Mohawk, from 
theTyendinaga Mohawk Territory, Ontario as Mediator.The Mohawk Community of 
Kanesatake has accepted the AFN offer to haveMr. Ralph Brant as the 
Mediator.On Monday, April 12th, 2004, Mr. Augustine met with James 
Gabriel'srepresentatives, Mike Stalk Sr. in Montreal, Quebec and offered the 
samemediation proposal to James Gabriel. Mr. Stalk personally supported 
AFN'sassistances and the mediation proposal.On Tuesday, April 13th, 2004 at 
his press conference James Gabrielrefused the Mediator and the mediation 
process as the means to resolve thiscrisis in a peaceful manner.Today, in 
Ottawa, James Gabriel met with the National Chief to discussthe AFN 
mediation proposal. "We understand that James Gabriel agreed to amediation 
process but with pre-conditions" stated Chief Steven Bonspille. "TheMohawk 
Community of Kanesatake does not support a mediation process with 
pre-conditions" added Chief Steven Bonspille.The Mohawk Community has 
mandated Chief Steven Bonspille to meet JamesGabriel on one to one basis to 
discuss the mediation proposal.
