La campagne ALCAN’t en Inde supporte les dizaines de milliers de paysans
indigènes et hors-castes de la région de Kashipur, en Inde, dans leur lutte
pour protéger leur habitat et leurs vies contre un mégaprojet de mine de
bauxite financé par ALCAN. ALCAN, dont le siège social est situé à
Montréal,
est l’une des plus grandes compagnies d’aluminium au monde. L’atelier
d’information servira à présenter les faits et à accroître le support local
pour le mouvement populaire du Kashipur contre les activités non-éthiques
et
illégitimes d'ALCAN en Inde.

Abhimanyu Sud, membre de la campagne ALCAN’t en Inde présentera les enjeux
du Kashipur et les placera dans le contexte de l’histoire d’ALCAN et de ses
opérations un peu partout dans le monde.

Angad Bhalla, documentariste qui revient tout juste du Kashipur, présentera
son film « UAIL go back ! », qui documente la résistance populaire des 12
dernières années. Il fournira également une mise à jour sur la situation
actuelle dans les villages concernés.

Frédéric Dubois, journaliste indépendant basé à Montréal, partagera son
expérience suite à une enquête qu’il a mené au Kashipur en février dernier.
Il élaborera sur l’ampleur du mouvement anti-mine et anti-Alcan dans l’état
indien d’Orissa.

Cet atelier d’information fait partie d’une mobilisation plus vaste, dans
le
contexte de l’Assemblé Générale annuelle d’Alcan qui doit se tenir le jeudi
22 avril, à Montréal. L’objectif de ALCAN’t en Inde est d’apporter les
revendications des habitants du Kashipur aux directeurs et actionnaires
d’ALCAN. Nous devons montrer à ALCAN que leur projet de mine et de
raffinerie a déjà eu un impact dévastateur sur la vie de milliers de
personnes, avant même leur construction! Jusqu’à quand permettrons-nous à
ALCAN d’aller de l’avant avec ses opérations d’exploitation illégitime ?

ALCAN'T IN INDIA TEACH-IN THIS SATURDAY, April 17
2-4pm at the South Asian Women's Community Centre
1035 Rachel Street East (corner Christophe Colomb)

The Alcan't in India campaign is supporting the tens of thousands of
indigenous and low-caste peoples of Kashipur (eastern India) in their work
to protect their homes and lives from an Alcan-backed bauxite mine and
refinery. Alcan, with headquarters in Montreal, is one of the world's
largest multinational aluminum corporations. The teach-in will provide
compelling evidence for the peoples of Montreal to support the Kashipur
movement against Alcan's unethical and illegitimate actions in India.

Abhimanyu Sud, a member of the Alcan't campaign, will introduce the issue
in
Kashipur and frame it in the context of Alcan's corporate history and
world-wide operations.

Angad Bhalla, a film-maker who has just returned from Kashipur, will be
presenting his film "UAIL Go Back" which documents the peoples' 12-year
struggle. He will provide some fresh updates on the current situation on
the ground.

Frederic Dubois, an independent Montreal journalist, will share his
experiences from his investigative trip to Kashipur in February 2004. He
will elaborate on the depth of the anti-mining and anti-Alcan movement in
east Indian state of Orissa.

This teach-in is part of a larger mobilization around Alcan's Annual
General
Meeting to be held at 10am on Thursday April 22nd in Montreal. Alcan't in
India's goal is to take the message of the peoples of Kashipur directly to
the decision makers at Alcan. We need to show Alcan that their proposed
mine and refinery have been devastating the lives of thousands of people
even before they have been built. How much longer can we allow Alcan to
continue its exploitative and illegitimate operations?
