Colten Boushie was a 22-year-old from Red Pheasant Cree Nation in
Saskatchewan. In August 2016, Colten was shot and killed on a farm while
out for a drive with his friends. On February 9th, Gerald Stanley was
acquitted of all charges in the murder of Colten.

All funds raised will go to the Boushie/Baptiste Family - care of
Colten's mother, Debbie - to support them in their time of mourning and
healing, and on their journey for justice.

2. Unsettling Canada reading group (Feb 15, March 15, April 19)

The second session for discussing Arthur Manuel's 'Unsettling Canada’
(and complementary readings) will be this THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 15, from 6
- 8:30 pm.

Location: University of Ottawa, Lamoureux Hall (145 JJ Lussier Prvt.),
Rm 242, on unceded Algonquin land

The Facebook event page for all the sessions is here:
https://www.facebook.com/events/1430143353775283/ -- Please check it for
updates and discussion points.

At the first session, some participants brought up important questions
about territorial acknowledgements. So we are suggesting two
complementary readings on an issue relevant to Algonquin people — the
controversial Algonquin land claim process — and a review of Unsettling
Canada by Kam’ayaam/Chachim’multhnii (Cliff Atleo, Jr.) that begins:
“Arthur Manuel is not a radical."

———

The reading schedule is:

** Unsettling Canada by Arthur Manuel **

January 18: Foreword-Chapter 4
February 15: Chapter 5-9 (up to p. 125)
March 15: Chapter 10-13 (up to p.179)
April 19: Chapter 14-UNDRIP Appendix (up to 251)

** Complementary Readings for Feb 15 **

If you haven't caught up yet, or weren’t able to come last time, just do
you best to get as deep as you can. If you don't have a copy of the
book, Octopus Books has some. We have a few hard copies and e-books on
hand too (free or pay-what-you-can), which you can claim by emailing
indigsol at riseup.net.

There will be a scheduled break, and some light snacks available. Please
contact us (indigsol at riseup.net) with any questions, if you need help
paying for bus fare, or have any other accommodation needs.

———
The format will involve small-group discussions of chapters from the
book, and of complementary readings. Please note that moderators will
generally be members of the IPSMO collective, from a settler background
– folks who have been involved in Indigenous solidarity work themselves
and with a long-term interest in unsettling themselves and our society,
but not Indigenous themselves. (We believe that there’s important work
to be done by settlers in educating their own community and pointing
peers towards Indigenous resources, and that settlers don’t have an
inherent right to always have an Indigenous person hold their hand and
educate them about the basics of colonialism.)
