Algonquin Territory / Ottawa, June 29
Last night, as the Bawating Water Protectors and allies arrived on
Parliament Hill, 9 people were detained immediately, and a 4-hour
standoff ensued while police tried to stop people from putting up the
tipi. Eventually the peaceful ceremony was allowed to continue, with the
tipi set up at the east gate of Parliament Hill (opposite the Prime
Minister’s office) at 2 am.
This is just the start of the days of ceremony organized in response to
Idle No More's #Unsettling150 call to action. Last night the first
people targeted by the police were tall Indigenous folks, who (among
others) are now banned from Parliament hill. Please pay attention, and
if you can bring yourself there physically to occupy space, to protect
those who will be targeted most in the coming days! And bring waterproof
things to stay dry! And stay safe. The water protectors have emphasized
that this is peaceful ceremony, not a protest, so people are asked to
set their intentions accordingly.
