Unsettling 150: Join IPSMO’s first reading group!

Read Arthur Manuel's 'Unsettling Canada: A National Wake-up Call' with
us, and then come talk about it and about strategies for unsettling and
decolonizing ‘Canada'.

First session: January 18, 2018, 6-8:30pm

**********

Earlier this year, Indigenous activists associated with Idle No More and
Defenders of the Land rejected celebrations of the 150th anniversary of
the settler-colonial state of Canada. They encouraged people to,
instead, read Arthur Manuel’s book 'Unsettling Canada: A National
Wake-up Call'. See the call-out here:
http://unsettling150.ca/canada-must-read/

Manuel, who passed away in January 2017, was one of the leading
strategists of the anti-colonial struggle. His book, co-authored with
Grand Chief Ronald Derrickson, showed how Canadian policy toward
Indigenous peoples incorporated and still reflects all the elements of
colonialism that are condemned by the United Nations: dispossession,
forced dependency and oppression.

March.

"The loss of our lands has been the precise cause of our impoverishment.
Indigenous Peoples control only 0.2 [per cent] of the land in Canada
while settler governments claim control of the other 99.8 [per cent].
With this distribution of land, you don't have to have a doctorate in
economics to understand who will be poor and who will be rich. And our
poverty is crushing." - Arthur Manuel, Secwepemc Nation

— Article by Arthur Manuel: ‘Until Canada gives Indigenous people their
land back, there can never be reconciliation’ (January 18, 2017)

http://rabble.ca/blogs/bloggers/views-expressed/2017/01/until-canada-gives-indigenous-people-their-land-back-there-ca

"2017 marks the fact that we have been officially colonized by Canada
for 150 years. This is an important milestone and it is time for us to
decide if we want to continue to be colonized peoples or if we want to
seek self-determination.

We have to face the fact that Canada is a settler state that was created
by Great Britain to take over our Indigenous territories for use and
benefit of Canada. This kind of human exploitation is called
colonization and it is designed to give settler Canadians ownership over
all Indigenous lands. Indigenous peoples basically subsidize the
Canadian economy with free land and resources.”
