This workshop, led by both Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth, was born
out of the Canadian Roots Exchange - Youth Reconciliation Initiative (YRI).
The YRI is designed to train and empower youth from Indigenous and
non-Indigenous communities and to facilitate collaborative efforts to
continue informing and mobilizing Canada's young people. We aim to continue
the process of learning about Indigenous histories and to stress the
importance of positioning ourselves on the land that we work and live on,
and call home. This workshop strives to build cultural solidarity through
an interactive dialogue about our relationships to the land and its
histories. It will provide a more critical look at the contributions of
Indigenous communities in Canadian history, while work towards dispelling
stereotypes of Indigenous Peoples in Canada. Join us in exploring within
ourselves and with each other what decolonization and reconciliation can
look like.
*Friday, October 17th*

Though less than 200 years old, Ottawa - Gatineau has a rich tradition of
protest, strike and rebellion, dramatic events that shaped not only this
region, but the very nature of Canada. This tour visits 9-10 sites of
protest, strike and rebellion to highlight some of the key events in the
history of Ottawa and Canada, from events originating locally like the 1849
Stoney Monday Riot, to those which started elsewhere like the 1971 Abortion
Rights Caravan. At each site, we will explore the context for the event,
its outcome, and its significance for today.
This 3 hour tour starts with a visit to the Rideau Canal and makes its way
to Parliament Hill. Limited to 15 spots so please RSVP to vcopirg at gmail.com.
Meet at the National Gallery spider.

<https://www.facebook.com/events/856657884347459/>*
This workshop explores the relationship we have with our bodies and how
this affects our ability and capacity to care for the world around us.
Through experiential activities, like breathing, body charting, movement
and self-care activities, we will explore how present we are in our bodies,
and how we can bring more attention and awareness into our bodily
experience. Each participant will come away with the understanding of why
it is important to be in our bodies and work through our traumas in order
to be more effective activists, organizers and community support people.
Everyone will leave with skills and knowledge to facilitate the continual
progression back into our bodies.
We will also explore our ideas around creating communities of care, how
these communities can facilitate being in our bodies and, ultimately,
create the conditions to end cycles of violence and oppression within our
communities. This workshop is open to people of all genders, body types,
backgrounds and abilities. Please note that I cannot speak ASL and welcome
having a translator present.

Come support Lynn Gehl's Section 15 Charter Challenge, Lynn Gehl vs.
Attorney General of Canada, on the unknown and unstated paternity in the
Indian Act.
Despite decades of advocacy and litigation work by Indigenous women that
led to amendments to the Indian Act in 1985 and 2011, under Aboriginal
Affairs' current regime, and as of 1985, a father must sign his baby's
birth certificate for his Indian status registration to be factored into
the child's eligibility. Otherwise, through an unstated paternity policy,
the Registrar applies a negative assumption of paternity whereby the child
may not be entitled to Indian status, and consequently band membership and
her/his treaty rights. This assumption of non-Indian paternity is sex
discrimination.
Please review her webpage for detailed information regarding the case:

If you cannot attend the court proceedings then you can still offer your

*"**Screening of 'Marmato' and panel discussion on threatened human rights
defenders in Colombia**"*
*https://www.facebook.com/events/1476202799312516/*
<https://www.facebook.com/events/1476202799312516/>
This event marks 20 Years of Peace Brigades International's accompaniment
of threatened human rights defenders in Colombia and the Ottawa Premiere of
Marmato, a film on mining in Colombia.
Marmato Synopsis:
If Colombia is the focal point of the new global gold rush then Marmato, a
mining town with over 500 years of history, is the new frontier. In its
mountain there are $20 billion dollars in gold, but its 8,000 inhabitants
are at risk of being displaced by an open-pit mining project. MARMATO
chronicles how the townspeople confront a Canadian mining company that
wants the gold beneath their homes. Filmed over the course of 6 years,
MARMATO is a canvas of magic realism and the confrontation with globalized
mining.
*Sunday, October 26th*
*12:00pm at Parliament Hill*
*"The Blanketed Truth Covering Turtle Island - Mass Blanket Exercise on the
Hill"*
*https://www.facebook.com/events/698434986914543/
<https://www.facebook.com/events/698434986914543/>*
We, at A7G [Assembly of Seven Generations], have been inspired by the
Blanket Exercise, created by KAIROS, to hold a mass scaled exercise on
Parliament Hill to make a huge impact and spread the message that this
exercise delivers. The exercise takes participants into the roles of
Indigenous people and puts them in the moccasins of first peoples. It
allows participants to role play through the perspective of Indigenous
people from first contact to present day. This Indigenous perspective
reveals more than the textbook version of Canadian history and
reinvigorates important key facts lost in translation. It touches down on
subjects such as our treaties, the Indian act, Residential schools and much
more.
*Saturday, November 1st*
*8:30am to 3:00pm at the Wabano Centre for Aboriginal Health (299 Montreal
Road)*
