Honour Your Word
Director: Martha Stiegman • Documentary Feature • 56m • Canada
Premiering today, November 3, at the American Indian Film Festival
Marylynn Poucachiche and Norman Matchewan faced tear gas and police batons
when they joined their parents on the barricades to defend the Barriere
Lake Algonquins’ traditional territory in the 1980s. Little did Marylynn
and Norman realize they would still be on the barricades over 20 years
later, this time with their own young children at their sides.
Honour Your Word, is the dramatic story of a tiny First Nations community
in Quebec with big strength of character and determination, and follows
new Algonquin leaders, as their community fights to protect their land,
way of life, and their language.

Remembering the Civil Service Research Study:
A note from Alisha Seguin, Carleton University
This academic year I will be conducting an oral history project, titled
"Remembering the Civil Service: Aboriginal Labour Experiences in the
Post-War Ottawa Civil Service." Information from this study will be used
towards writing an MA thesis at Carleton University and the project has
been approved by the Carleton University Research Ethics Board.
This initiative is designed to help self-identifying First Nation, Métis
and Inuit individuals share their stories about what it is like to work
for the Canadian federal civil service in a student, temporary or
permanent position. This is an important activity to participate in,
because these voices as workers are currently missing from Canadian labour
history. Sharing memories of the civil service will allow for greater
public and academic recognition of Aboriginal contributions to the
Canadian economy and the country that we know in the present. It will also
help scholars understand the transition period Canada went through to make
the civil service a more representative workforce. Interview materials
(audio records and transcripts) may be deposited in Archives and Research
Collections (ARC), the archive at Carleton University so that these
stories may be accessed in person and/or digitally. This may become a
valuable cultural resource for interviewees and the communities to which
they belong. Anonymity is available and sometimes recommended to those
interviewed. In these cases, participation will still be extremely
valuable.
More information about the study is available on the following website -
http://www.rememberingthecivilservice.com - or my twitter page
- https://twitter.com/AlishaSeguin
This study aims to interview all interested First Nation, Métis and Inuit
workers who have held a student, temporary or full-time position in the
Canadian federal civil service.
