Subject: Call for Witnesses
An upcoming human rights complaint is an opportunity to support our
partner, the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society
<http://www.fncaringsociety.com/> . The complaint alleges that the
Government of Canada provides less funding for child welfare services to
First Nations children on reserves than to non-Indigenous children.
The Human Rights Tribunal has scheduled two days to address preliminary
issues in the First Nations child welfare case before proceeding to a full
hearing on the merits. The dates are September 25 and 26. The location is
160 Elgin Street, 11th Floor, in Ottawa . The hearings begin daily at 9:00
a.m.
The Tribunal is open to the public. We invite you to attend and show your
support for culturally based equity for First Nations children, as well as
to witness history in the making!
We would also appreciate your help in spreading the word and sharing this
message with your networks.
It is important that we fill the room to show the Canadian government we
care about the outcome of this tribunal!
The Tribunal room has a capacity of about 75. As they are hoping to have a
number of children/youth present, the Caring Society has set up a Doodle
poll to keep track of who is coming and when:
http://doodle.com/2hiawqe3bazyquu7 <http://doodle.com/2hiawqe3bazyquu7>
If you are able to attend, please enter your name or the name of your
organization, and the number of people who are coming. Example: The Caring
Society (4 people)
For those who are learning about this for the first time, we realize that
it is rather short notice. Please know that there will be many other
opportunities to get involved as these are the preliminary hearings and
the full hearing on the merits is yet to come.
If you cannot attend, you can always sign up to follow the case online:
http://www.fncaringsociety.com/fnwitness
And, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to be in touch with
either myself or Jennifer King,
Education and Public Engagement Coordinator at the Caring Society:
jking at fncaringsociety.com.
Finally, this mailing list will be used to inform you of urgent action
requests from KAIROS partners, or upcoming KAIROS events in the Ottawa
area. We anticipate about one email per month. If you would like to be
removed from this list or know of someone who may be interested in being
added, please let me know.
Best,
Katy Quinn
