Hello everyone,

Thank you for those who came out to the Cube Gallery for a fundraiser for
the Algonquins of Barriere Lake this Monday with August Schellenberg! We
had a wonderful event and raised $1000. Check out this link for some good
photos from that evening:
https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.463618693655060.129116.116217665061833&type=3
.

Please continue supporting Barriere Lake and commit whatever you can to
keeping this struggle alive. Barriere Lake's customary government receives
no monies from the government and have fought courageously and tenaciously
for over 20 years to protect their vision of environmentally sustainable
development on their lands.

Please make cheques out to *'Indigenous Peoples Solidarity Movement Ottawa*'
with '*Barriere Lake Defense Fund*' in the memo line, and mail to:
OPIRG-GRIPO Ottawa, 631 King Edward Ave. (3rd floor), Ottawa, ON, K1N 7N8,
Algonquin Territory.

*1) DOCTRINE OF DISCOVERY*

Doctrine of Discovery is an international legal principle constructed by
european christian nations in the fifteenth century to justify their
dominance to indigenous peoples and their lands, territories and resources
in the non-Christian countries around the world. Its application continues
today and sets the foundation of the laws in colonial states - the united
states, australia, new zealand and canada.

*Examples of its contemporary application:* the exploitations and human
rights violations of indigenous peoples and their lands by canadian mining,
oil and gas corporations including Barrick Gold Corporation, Goldcorp Inc.
Enbridge Inc. and TransCanada Corporation. The proposed Enbridge Northern
Gateway pipeline, Keystone XL pipeline, Pacific Trails Pipeline and Kinder
Morgan pipeline project, Plan Nord of the quebec government. Ring of Fire
in northern ontario. Cultural appropriations such as Olympic mascots and
Hudson Bay Co. sweaters.

Doctrine of Discovery is also the theme of this year's UN Permanent Forum
on Indigenous Peoples concluded on Friday, May 18. In the permanent forum,
the representatives of indigenous nations not only spoke about the ongoing
impacts of this doctrine on their people but also recommendations on how to
redress these impacts.

We felt that this important topic is worthy our attention and understanding
as it is a rationalization which underpins the colonization of Turtle
Island (aka north america) and other parts of the world. It legitimizes the
morally condemnable, socially unjust and racist policies against Indigenous
peoples worldwide.

*3) HONOURING INDIGENOUS WOMEN VOLUME 2 CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS*

The deadline for this call is approaching! It's *June 30, 2012*!

First, Big Thanks to those of you, incredible Native women, who have
already submitted your creative work! We are so honoured to be able to
listen to you.

As part of IPSMO’s Honouring Indigenous Women campaign and to follow our
successful volume 1 of Honouring Indigenous Women: Hearts of Nations
booklet, we continue to work towards making space to actively listen to
Indigenous women’s voices as well as to critically reflect our relations to
colonialism.

We are inviting Native women from all nations – First Nations, Métis and
Inuit – to tell us your stories about your experiences as Native women,
your resistance to colonialism, and your resurgence in the context of your
traditions, language and culture.

We are also inviting non-Native women to tell us about your relations to
colonialism and your responsibilities to (re)build relationship with
Indigenous women.

We are still looking for submissions! Please send us your creative
expression soon. We haven’t received any from non-Native women yet! If you
are not a native woman, including native and non-native men and Two Spirit,
please consider telling us your reflections on your relationship with
colonialism and your responsibility to decolonize.

For more details on this call for your creative expressions, please check
our web site: www.ipsmo.org.

*4) RIVER RUN 2012: TAKE ACTION WITH GRASSY NARROWS!*

Asubpeeschoseewagong Anishinabek (Grassy Narrows) is organizing a series of
community-led actions for justice for their people, and for the protection
of the water, air, and forests that give life to us all, from *June 5 to
June 8 in Toronto*. A group of youth from the community has began walking
from their reserve to Toronto (*Makade Mukwa walk for water 2012*) and will
converge with their people for the River Run rally in Grange Park at noon
on June 8.

Please join them in Toronto.

*5) SIX NATIONS SAYS: NO TO THE ENBRIDGE PIPELINE*

If the Enbridge proposed pipeline project in Ontario is accepted by
National Energy Board, Enbridge would pump corrosive tar sands oil through
a pipeline (Line 9) that was built in 1975, from Sarnia to Westover. If
Enbridge’s plan goes ahead, it would also extend this existing pipeline
from Westover to Montreal. This pipeline goes right through the Haldimand
Tract, Six Nations Territory, just north of Brantford. Notwithstanding the
humongous risk of oil spill via this decades-old pipeline, and threats to
the Great Lakes, a series of rivers and numerous farmlands, this project
and its review process have violated various treaties the Crown and Canada
made with Six Nations and do not have the Free, Prior and Informed consent
from Six Nations.

*
*
*“We are not only fighting for our rights but yours too” said grandmother
and long time Indigenous activist Ruby Montour, after members of the Board
and lawyers from the Oil companies left the presentation room. “They need
to be fair with our people, with you, your ancestors and your children. The
environment is going to pay big time if these pipelines rupture and they
need to listen to our concerns. They need to speak to us, the real people
who need to be spoken to, whose treaties have been broken. They forced us
to go to school, they forced us to learn, and we learned so now we know
when they are lying or cheating. Well, they can’t anymore. They can’t force
things on our lands.”*
