The Decho First Nations have been involved in formal
negotiations with the governments of Canada and the Northwest
Territories for over thirty years.
We, the Dehcho Dene have been struggling since 1969 for
rightful recognition of our rights in a just and fair manner. When an
Agreement with the territorial and federal governments is reached,
we will have the governing authority and the resources to protect our
lands and ensure that we can continue to live according to Dene
values and principles in all aspects of our lives.
"Dehcho Ndehe Gha Nadaotsethe: Fighting for our Land," is
a project of the Dehcho First Nations (DFN) Communiciations team.
It brings together in one film key moments of Dehcho history, and
explains our struggle to retain control of our homeland.
This film is an invaluable educational and mobilization tool to
inform and involve all members of our communities in the process of
reaching an agreement that allows future generations to continue to
live in a way that honours and respects the land of our ancestors.

2) Thursday, May 20 - This is an Under Pressure Demonstration that the
IPSM Ottawa supports and is mobilizing in support of.
Protest against the Liberal governemnt's cuts to the Special Diet Allowance.
We won't be quiet, We need the special diet!
Indigenous people are extremely over-represented among people living in
poverty. The fundametal reason for this is historical and ongoing
colonialism -the theft of their lands and resources, and the appropriation
of their spirituality and cultures.
"To situate this crucial issue, I can think of nothing more compelling
than to cite the main thesis in a paper entitled Same Country: Same
Lands, 78 Countries Away by Cindy Blackstock, an Aboriginal activist and
executive director of the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of
Canada. In this paper, Ms. Blackstock demonstrates that Canadas
aboriginal peoples would rank 78th on the UNDPs Human Development Index,
while Canada has consistently placed at the top (1-3) of countries on that
scale."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What: protest because the Special Diet Allowance was cut
When: Thursday May 20th, 1pm
Where: meet at the corner of Montreal road and Begin st. (in Vanier)
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
In this years provincial budget the Ontario Liberals cut the Special Diet
Allowance, while raising the welfare rates by LESS that the inflation
rate. This adds up to a 3% CUT in welfare spending in Ontario. This is
only the third time a government has cut welfare spending.
The special diet allowance was money accessible to some OW and ODSP
recipients who needed it for specific health related dietary needs,
allergies, etc. The maximum amount of money a person could receive from
the SDA was 250$. For people receiving SDA money, the cut represents as
much as 30% less on their welfare cheques.
Although the Liberals have done nothing to reverse the rate cuts imposed
by the Conservatives, the SDA was one of the few options available for
poor people in Ontario who were tired of having to make the decision
between paying the rent and buying groceries.
In recent years a groundswell of activity led to a sharp increase in
people finding out about the SDA and signing up. This meant that the
Ontario Government was now spending an extra $194 million a year on
welfare.Due to the SDAs recent growth in cost and popularity, the
government has decided to cut it.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
FIGHT BACK
Across the province anti-poverty organizations are gearing up to fight
these cuts. In Toronto, almost 1000 people gathered on April 15th to voice
their opposition to these cuts.
In Ottawa, Under Pressure, an anti-poverty and anti-capitalist
organization, is planning this protest in Vanier at MPP Madelaine
Meilleurs office. Meilleur is the Minister of Community Services,
responsible for the loss of the SDA.
We wont be quiet we need the Special Diet

In support of the Ottawa Palestine Solidarity Network - Protest
Netanyahu's visit to Ottawa
WAR CRIMINALS UNWELCOME HERE
At the end of May, Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu will be coming to
Canada, including visits to Ottawa and Toronto. The Ottawa Palestine
Solidarity Network is organizing a protest of Netanyahus visit on Monday,
May 31, starting at 5pm, at the Human Rights Monument in Ottawa. We need
you to join us and to bring all your friends.
The occupation. The wall. The siege. The Settlements. The impunity. The
Israeli occupation is becoming increasingly brutal with the unflinching
support of the Canadian government. For all these reasons and more, it's
crucial for all Canadians who believe in justice and peace and justice to
take a stand.
The illegal siege of Gaza continues to suffocate the Palestinians who live
there, preventing them from rebuilding from Israels attack on last year
that killed 1400 people (half of them children). The recent legislation
giving the Israeli military discretion to deport Palestinians from the
West Bank is an affront to human rights and democracy.
The OPSN is calling on groups from coast to coast to organize local
solidarity demonstrations on or near May 31, to protest Netanyahus
upcoming attempt to re-brand Israel in Canada, and the complicity of the
Canadian government in Israels violations of international law.
Let us join together in solidarity to oppose occupation and take a stand
for justice, peace and human rights!
Check back here soon for more details.
