The Indigenous Peoples’ Solidarity Movement of Ottawa acknowledges that
the city of Ottawa exists on occupied Omàmìwinini (Algonquin) land.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

IPSMO is a grassroots organization that directly supports indigenous
peoples in diverse struggles for justice. We also work within communities
to challenge the lies and half-truths about indigenous peoples and
colonization that dominate Canadian society. The organization is open to
both indigenous and non-indigenous people, and focuses on local and
regional campaigns.

1) Updates

1a) IPSM Ottawa current plans and future organizing

The IPSM has two events coming up soon. The first of which is our “New
Members’ Meeting” which is intended for people who would like to know more
about IPSMO and who think that they might like to get involved in doing
indigenous solidarity organizing. The second is a workshop at the
“Organizing for Justice” Mayday Weekend. The details of both events are
included in the newsletter’s “Events” section.

We are also happy to say that the Indigenous Sovereignty Ottawa Organizing
Committee, a coalition of groups who support the “Defenders of the Land”
network and the principle of indigenous sovereignty, has begun to meet and
plan for Indigenous Sovereignty Week 2010. If you or your group are
interested in getting involved, contact us: ipsmo at riseup.net

==========================

The IPSM is now having "New Member's Meetings" in order to make it easier
for new people to get involved in the group.

New Member's Meetings are an opportunity for people to learn about what
indigenous solidarity organizing is and how to do it. We will also provide
a brief introduction to the campaigns and support work that we do.
Finally, we will address how IPSMO works as a collective.

Currently we have 4 organizing priorities, which include support for the
Ardoch Algonquin and Barriere Lake Algonquin, Native Women's Struggles and
Two-Spirited People's Struggles.

3a) What Is To Be Done? Strategy and Tactics for the Radical Left

================================
Wednesday, April 21 at 7pm
Jack Purcell Community Centre, Room 101
320 Jack Purcell Lane
(Near the corner of Elgin and Gilmour)
Everyone Welcome!
Wheelchair Accessible
================================

------------------------------------------------------
Panelists will include:

Andrew Nellis, Ottawa Panhandler's Union
Karen Cocq, Collectif du Chat Noir
Carlo Fanelli, Socialist Project
------------------------------------------------------

The "Heart Attack" demonstration at the Anti-Olympics Convergence on Feb.
13 has become a controversial subject on the radical left, primarily
because of the property destruction that happened that day. In addition to
all of the controversy and acrimony there were also some productive
debates, and valuable ideas that resulted from arguments about political
strategy and “diversity of tactics”. Further discussion is necessary in
particular because of the upcoming anti-G8/G20 protests in Toronto.

Divisive and acrimonious arguments are a frequent feature of
post-convergence political landscapes. We hope that by beginning this
discussion prior to the G8/G20 convergence we can minimize the divisions
caused by different political strategies and tactics.

We also believe that the radical left needs to pay more attention to
strategizing. This involves finding ways to move on our own agendas,
rather than constantly reacting to Right wing attacks on oppressed
peoples’ rights and freedoms, as important as this work can be. We also
believe that formulating these strategies has the potential to make all of
our activist efforts more effective, and to build common ground between
different political traditions that are part of the broad radical left.

================================

The Decolonial Study Group is a project of the IPSM Ottawa. We will be
deepening and broadening our understanding and analysis of indigenous
struggles for decolonization, social justice and revolution. We will be
doing this through readings, workshops, oral presentations, movies and so
on.

The reading for the study group on Sunday, April 25 will focus on the
Indian Act. The Indian Act is the fundamental piece of legislation through
which the Canadian state seeks to control Indigenous People in Canada.

For this study group there will be core articles which we ask everyone to
read, as well as additional articles and information for people who have
the time and the interest to get deeper into the subject matter.

Core Readings:

Gender, Race, and the Regulation of Native Identity in Canada and the
United States: An Overview by Bonita Lawrence

The essay is pretty long, so feel free to stop at "American Discourses of
Indianess." Also read the "Summary," page 24-25. Of course, you`re
encouraged to read the whole essay.

You need to friend "Matthew Brown" in order to see the essay. Sorry about
that! It is due to the way Facebook works.

Additional Readings:

"An Indian Act: A Response to Genocide"

"HOW SHARON MCIVOR IS TAKING ON THE INDIAN ACT"

And everyone is welcome whether they've done the readings or not!

Indigenous Solidarity for Settlers

Jack Purcell Community Centre

ipsmo at riseup.net
http://www.ipsmo.org
Part of the Organizing for Justice Mayday Weekend
http://www.OrganizingForJustice.ca
===============================

The goal of the workshop is to educate non-indigenous people about the
importance of indigenous solidarity and to teach people and learn from
them about what solidarity means and how to do it.

The IPSM Ottawa is a predominantly settler organization that works toward
building a movement of non-indigenous people actively supporting
indigenous people struggling for justice and decolonization.

Our workshop “Indigenous Solidarity for Settlers” consists of three parts:

1) Looking at colonization from an anti-oppressive framework.

We look at how colonization has historically and continues to be imposed
through individual behaviour and institutional and cultural oppression.

2) What does solidarity mean?

We focus on what solidarity is and how to “do it”. The word solidarity is
used a lot, especially in radical organizing, but it is not always easy to
define or to do. Put simply we believe that it is essential in solidarity
work to “listen, take direction and stick around”.

3) Case study

Using an example from the organizing that the IPSM has done, such as
organizing in support of the Barriere Lake Algonquin, we will explore what
solidarity work looks like in practice. Using concrete examples from our
own experiences we analyze the strengths and weaknesses of this organizing
in order to examine how to do solidarity work well.

5) Announcements

5a) Declaration of non-Indigenous Support for Defenders of the
     Land

We are non-Indigenous supporters of Defenders of the Land, a network of
Indigenous communities in struggle for land and self-determination across
Canada, founded at a historic meeting in Winnipeg from November 12-14,
2008.

As non-Indigenous supporters, we are allies of Indigenous peoples
asserting their rights and sovereignty. We offer our support for the
demands of Defenders of the Land expressed in their Basis of Unity, a
signpost on the path we walk together. We believe in taking leadership
from Indigenous communities, who have the right to determine their
destinies in accordance with their own beliefs, customs, laws, and
traditions.

5b) Support community radio - support The Circle at CHUO 89.1FM

Hello everyone!

This is Lisa Abel, and since December 2008 I have been the volunteer host
of an Aboriginal-themed radio show called *The Circle*. It airs every
Thursday between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m. on *CHUO 89.1FM* at the University of
Ottawa, and also streams online at *www.chuo.fm*.

*This is The Circle*:

   - A grassroots-based radio program that's focused on the Aboriginal
community here in the Ottawa area. Over the past year The Circle has
aired interviews with many of our community members, representatives
from Aboriginal organizations, student achievers, local activists
   and Elders.

- Some of the organizations represented on air in 2009-10 include:
the Ottawa Aboriginal Coalition, Wabano Centre for Aboriginal
Health, Ottawa Regional Métis Council, Native Women's Association
of Canada, National Association of Friendship Centres, First
Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada, Indigenous
     People's Solidarity Movement - Ottawa, Carleton University's
Centre for Aboriginal Culture and Education, the Mamidosewin
Centre at Algonquin College and the Aboriginal Resource Centre
     at the University of Ottawa.
- Provides access to a national audience of community radio
listeners by sharing interviews and items that would be of
interest to a national audience through the National Campus and
  Community Radio (NCRA) Program Exchange.
- Features music and interviews with local and national First
  Nations, Inuit and Métis artists.
   - Shares community announcements on air and online.

Remember, CHUO reaches a diverse audience - CHUO is the Ottawa-Gatineau
region's only bilingual, community radio station. CHUO is more than just
entertainment; it’s a service that we, as a non-profit organization,
provide at no cost. CHUO is about social equity and inclusiveness often
lacking in mainstream media. CHUO provides the community with the
equipment, skills and resources to create and produce radio programming -
that's the training, equipment, support and know-how that helps make *The
Circle* a reality! At CHUO, we rely on the community’s generosity do so,
and are reaching out for your pledge. Your support allows CHUO to continue
exposing the region’s radio listeners to the music commercial radio just
doesn’t play and giving a
voice to cultural and community groups within the National Capital Region.
