3a) WHAT I LEARNED IN CLASS TODAY: Discussing Indigenous Struggles in the
Classroom, Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 6pm
OPIRG-Carleton and IPSMO present as part of the tools for change workshop
series:
WHAT I LEARNED IN CLASS TODAY
Discussing Indigenous Struggles in the Classroom
Workshop 1: Social Position
When: Tuesday, October 20, 6 pm
Where: Carleton University,OPIRG-Carleton Office, 326 University centre
(upstairs from Ziggy's hair salon on the second floor and downstairs from
the CUSA office on the 4th)
Classroom discussions of indigenous struggles often leave students feeling
alienated and angry. Though troubling, these situations often go
unreported and unresolved, affecting students' abilities to function in
classes and in their coursework. These workshops are intended to help both
aboriginal and non aboriginal people understand the impacts and
consequences of social position and dominant understandings of indigenous
peoples that can contribute to problematic incidents that occur in the
classroom context. Through discussion, activities and video, this project
aims to foster a more culturally sensitive and understanding learning
environment that addresses notions of privilege. Everyone is welcome.
Part of a series of four workshops, including Social Position,
Tokenization, Addressing Classroom Incidents Inside the Classroom, and
Improving the Classroom Situation: Thinking Through Potential Strategies.

Oerlikon Contraves, CAE, Rolls-Royce, Honeywell, Pratt & Whitney, Bell
Helicopter ? Qui sera dans la salle ? Paul Desmarais et son valet
Henri-Paul Rousseau ? Thierry Vandal, le propriétaire dHydro-Québec ?
Notre ministre privé du contrôle social André Chagnon ? Des membres du
gouvernement ? Qui sera dans la salle à 400 $ le couvert pour applaudir le
plus grand criminel de lhistoire contemporaine ?
George W. Bush et sa suite, cest :
- Deux élections volées alors même quil faisait la morale au monde entier ;
- Des guerres injustes et racistes en Irak et en Afghanistan, qui perdurent
au prix de dizaines de milliers de morts ;
- Une gestion de léconomie capitaliste qui a creusé à lextrême le fosse
entre les riches et les pauvres ;
- Une banalisation de la torture et un dédain assumé pour les droits
fondamentaux, la justice et la dignité humaine la plus élémentaire ;

Apportez vos vieux souliers ! Nous saluerons au passage la libération de

3d) Anti-colonial Thanksgiving (Guelph)
"anti-colonial struggle for land and survival, indigenous sovereignty"
Who are we?
Where are we from?
Where are we going?
You're invited to The 5th Annual Anti-Colonial Thanksgiving Dinner in
Guelph. The ACT Dinner is an autumn celebration bringing together land
defenders from indigenous and settler communities to speak about land,
culture, colonialism and freedom.
In the past year, indigenous communities across Turtle Island have stood
up against illegal developments, government repression and for indigenous
sovereignty in their terroritories. There have been blockades in
Akwesasne, Tyendinaga, Barriere Lake, and Six Nations. New developments
have been reclaimed by Six Nations. There have been restorative justice
programs set up in Six Nations and Tyendinega, and on the west coast an
indigenous resistance network was created to oppose the 2010 Olympics.
Across Canada the tension is mounting as the aspirations of anti-colonial
peoples and colonial culture collide. In Akwesasne the government is
attempting to re-install the border crossing with armed guards. In
Tyendinaga the OPP is attempting to bring in a contentious police station
to police the native territory. The Olympic torch is coming through every
large native and non-native community from coast to coast. And the 2010
Winter Olympics are set to start in February on stolen native land.
Before the Dinner, we will be hosting a workshop on contentious
developments planned in and around Guelph. The workshop will focus on a
short history of opposition to developments in Guelph, and how this ties
into indigenous land titles. Some information will be shared about current
developments facing opposition, including the Hanlon Creek Business Park,
and there will be opportunities to talk with other people in this city
opposing developments and to get involved.
This is going to be a potluck dinner, so please bring a dish to share. A
lot of the food served will be donated from local CSA Farms, Whole Circle,
Whole Village, Simple Thymes, Ignatious Farm and Heartwood Farm.

4b) A Critical Time for the Lubicon Cree Nation
Full Article:
http://intercontinentalcry.org/a-critical-time-for-the-lubicon-cree-nation/
A Critical Time for the Lubicon Cree Nation
The Lubicon Nation is at a critical juncture in their ongoing struggle
for land rights. This was perhaps made most evident last month, when
Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) cut off all funding to the
northern Alberta Nation because of a so-called unresolved political
dispute.
Closely resembling the leadership struggle in Barriere Lake, a
fraudulent election was held on Lubicon Territory on June 5, 2009,
without the consent of the Lubicon Government. The election, as reported
in the newly published Lubicon Lake Nation Newsletter (October 2009)
included voters from a number of other First Nations and paid no regard
to the Lubicon residency.
Steve Noskey, who is not a member of the Lubicon Nation, but, rather, the
Loon River Cree Nation, won the election and immediately declared himself
the new Chief.
Ultimately, this so-called dispute is a non-issue, like that of Barriere
Lake. Chief Bernard Ominayak was re-elected at Lubicon Nations official
election, held at the Community Longhouse on June 25, 2009.
However, INACs incompetence-masquerading-as-guardianship has forced the
Lubicon into a perilous position. Not only have they cut off all funding
(and shut down the community health center) but they have also opened the
gates just enough for Trans-Canada to wiggle its way in.
The company is moving ahead with their North Central Corridor pipeline
project. Reports the Lubicon Lake Nation News,
At the end of September, RCMP officers visited Chief Bernard Ominayak in
his office to inform him that Trans-Canada would be entering the Lubicon
Territory beginning Oct 15, 2009 to complete their North Central Corridor
pipeline project. Trans-Canada has not been given authorization by the
Lubicon Government to operate within the Territory. The North Central
Corridor project has been proceeding since 2008.
Since that time Trans-Canada officials have refused to enter into any
meaningful discussion with the Lubicon Government. The Lubicon Government
have repeatedly asked Trans-Canada officials to provide a written
statement indicating that Trans-Canada Corp. respects Lubicon land and
Lubicon jurisdiction over their Traditional Territory. This document has
never been drafted and as a result Trans-Canada has never been given the
right to access or operate within the Lubicon Territory. In 2008, without
the consent of the Lubicon Government, Trans-Canada Corp. had installed a
600 person work camp within the Lubicon Territory which had devastating
effects on the surrounding environment. The Lubicon Government has made
their position is clear: Trans-Canada Corp. is guilty of trespass against
the Lubicon Lake Nation.
Further trespass or attempts to construct a pipeline within Lubicon
Territory without the consent of the Lubicon Government will be stopped
by whatever means necessary. Chief Ominayak advised the RCMP that he
hopes they will uphold their duty to protect the Lubicon people from the
resource giant should that day arrive.
The RCMP responded days later by charging a Lubicon elder with uttering
threats after he spoke out against Trans-Canada surveyors who were
trespassing on Lubicon lands. It has come to the attention of the
Lubicon Government that a meeting between Trans-Canada officials and
Steve Noskey & Dwight Gladue took place in early October, 2009.
Sources indicate that Mr. Noskey & Mr. Gladue gave Trans-Canada a
blanket authorization to conduct any operations they wish within the
Lubicon Territory. Noskey and Gladue have no authority to speak on
behalf of the Lubicon Lake Nation. Clearly these two non-members have no
respect for the lands which they are claiming to govern or for the
people residing within those lands. (END)
Nor does Trans-Canada, despite assurances to the contrary, made by the
company last year.
Canadian Forest Oil (CFO), on the other hand, skipped the pleasant
platitudes altogether. Lubicon Lake News also reports that CFO, a
subsidiary of the U.S. company Forest Oil recently entered Lubicon
territory to commence an extensive drilling program in at least 9
separate locations. Work has begun on the first lease, with the company
using outside contractors without Lubicon consent.
The Cree Nation has since delivered notices by email and by telephone,
warning CFO that any further trespassing on Lubicon territory will be
stopped. Adds Lubicon Lake News, As in the case of Trans-Canada, the
Lubicon Lake Nation demand that ALL resource companies produce deeds or
titles to Lubicon Lands that lawfully supersedes Lubicon Aboriginal Title.
In absence of such a deed or title it is expected that resource companies
meet with and negotiate all rights of access with the Duly Elected
Government of the Lubicon Lake Nation.
Mounting Pressures
Mounting pressures from Trans-Canada, Canadian Forest Oil, the Alberta
Government, Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, and, at the very center,
the current Federal Government is a major threat to the Lubicon People,
their traditions, and their most basic human rights and indigenous rights.

4b) *Statement by Gord Hill Regarding Visits by Olympic Police Agents*
Occupied Coast Salish Territory [Vancouver, BC]
October 19, 2009
Vancouver's Incredibly Stupid Unit (VISU), also known as the 2010
Integrated Security Unit, attempted to visit me, Gord Hill, at my
residence in downtown Vancouver on Saturday, October 17, 2009. As I was
not home at the time, they left unrequested junk mail (their business
cards) with the following information:
*Ken Stolarchuk*, Joint Intelligence Group, Vancouver 2010 Integrated
Security Unit
Tel: 604-264-2972
Tel: 604-717-3349 ext. 2029
Fax: 604-264-3151
*Cst. Kirk Rattray*, Joint Intelligence Group, VISU, RCMP
Tel: 604-264-3254
Cell: 604-376-4013
Fax: 604-264-3151
kirk.rattray at rcmp-grc.gc.ca
Both cards had the address 5255 Heather St., Vancouver, BC, V5Z 1K6
The next day, Sunday October 18, two plainclothes cops repeatedly knocked
on my apartment door throughout the day, although I declined to answer.
They were subsequently observed sitting in a gold-coloured SUV across the
street of my apartment building, with the license plate 925 LBD.
Perhaps they learned something as they sat watching the homeless, the
poor, the drug addictscasualties of the 2010 Olympics & business
greedwho regularily congregate outside my apartment building near
Hastings & Carrall. Maybe they saw their compatriots routinely harassing,
searching, ticketing & arresting poor people, and thought it unjust. Then
again, probably not, cuz they're the Incredibly Stupid Unit.
I am confident that these visits by the Olympic cops were instigated by my
comments to CBC News on Tuesday, Oct. 13, in which I stated I supported
direct action and would not be opposed to the downing of power lines or
other acts of sabotage. Such are my views, and such are my 'legal rights'
in the nation-state of Canada, which presents itself as a champion of
democracy & free speech, and which whores itself around the world as a
leader of human rights.
Irregardless of such propaganda, Canada is in fact a routine violator of
human & civil rights and in particular those of Indigenous peoples, who
today suffer the highest rates of poverty, suicide, imprisonment, violent
death, poor health, substandard housing, etc. The Tar Sands in Alberta,
missing & murdered Native women, police violence against Natives
(including the deaths of elder Harriet Nahanee, Frank Paul, Kyle Tait,
etc.) are also forms of human & civil rights violations against Indigenous
peoples. Where is the justice, the alleged fruit of Canada's laws, in any
of this?
Furthermore, the government's of Canada & BC lack the legal & moral
authority to govern or carry out business on unceded Indigenous
territories. The *1763 Royal Proclamation*, which legally bound the
British, and later Canada, to negotiate treaties before any trade or
settlement could occur, was re-affirmed in the 1982 Constitution and
remains law to this day. 'BC' exists in violation of this law and is an
illegal government; consequently, Canada lacks jurisdiction on these
lands.
I reject the authority of both the provincial & federal governments. In
principle, no person on unceded Indigenous territory is bound to follow
the laws of an illegal and immoral government, which in any case only
serves the interests of the corporate elite.
Despite my beliefs, the government will seek to impose its rules on me as
a 'citizen' and to force my conformity to its laws. The government, being
little more than organized crime at its highest levels, have at their
disposal their gangs of street enforcers (the police), armed with a vast
apparatus of social control to ensure we all conform to its dictates
(which many do, naively believing in their state & its laws). As such, we
must hold these authorities accountable to their own laws, upon which
their legitimacy to rule are based, and expose their true nature:
-
the Charter of Rights & Freedoms, enshrined in the constitution of
Canada, guarantees each of its citizens the 'freedom' to express our
views, thoughts & beliefs, without fear of prosecution, intimidation or
harassment, so long as we do not promote hatred against any group of
people.
I hereby state: I would not oppose the sabotage of power lines or other
critical infrastructure of the capitalist economic system. I support
all forms of direct action & resistance against this corrupt &
illegitimate government along with its corporate circus, the 2010
Winter Olympics. We must use any means necessary to defend the earth
for future generations.
The 1763 Royal Proclamation requires the negotiation of treaties with
Indigenous nations prior to any trade or settlement on their lands. The
government's of Britain and Canada failed to do so in the province of
'british columbia' and instead imposed their colonial regime on the
Native peoples of this land. The imposition of the Canadian & BC
governments on unceded Indigenous lands is illegal & fraudulent.
In doing so, the government has committed genocide & continues to do so
to this day. Colonialism & genocide are violations of international laws
& covenants (as well as being forms of systemic violence). That such
conditions have existed for over 150 years shows the futility of
negotiations & seeking justice through the courts.
Due to their failure to follow their own laws, whether it is the Charter
or the 1763 Proclamation, I know I will be proven correct and that the
true nature of the government-corporate system will be revealed. It is a
criminal regime with no regard for human beings or the earth, except as
resources to be exploited. It will defend its criminal activities by any
means necessary, including the establishment of a militarized police
state (or the invasion & occupation of other countries).
This situation, and that of the world in general, with deepening
environmental, economic, and military crises, requires radical social
change. A struggle to transform society which will not be achieved through
purely legal or reformist methods. This is why I believe, and history
shows this to be true, that when the poor & oppressed rise up against
their oppressors, they do so by any means necessary. Ghandi & Martin
Luther King, prayers & pacifism, did not by themselves liberate India or
Blacks in the United States (or anyone, ever).
In this struggle, I stand on the side of the oppressed against the
oppressor. I stand with the earth and for life. Where do you stand? And if
you answer on the fence, be forewarned that the fence, along with the
power lines, are sooner or later going to come down. Will it be the land
defenders or Mother Earth? I don't know, but either way I would not oppose
it.

Greetings:
Please show your support for the release of Sundiata Acoli by sending a

specified below.
AND SIGN THE ONLINE PETITION:

Link to your websites and social networking pages!
Don't underestimate how important your letters are. We can't let this
opportunity to support Sundiata slip by us. Here's a few talking points to
get you started:
Letters that are especially useful are
1) Letters from New Jersey (but letters from EVERYWHERE are great)
2) Letters offering housing or work to Sundiata (he has both taken care
of, but it will be impressive to the parole board to know about all the
offers are being made- coming from New York in particular and across the
country)
PLEASE MAIL YOUR LETTERS TO SAFC ATTORNEY:
Atty. Florence Morgan
120-46 Queens Blvd., Kew Gardens, NY 11415.
It is important we keep a record of the number of letters that are sent
and the diversity among supporters of his release. SAFC will make a copy
and forward letters to the board.
Feel free to personalize your letters with a brief introduction about who
you are/what you do.
Please note also police agencies consistently refer to Sundiata as a
domestic terrorist. Letters should also refute this claim by stating he is
no threat to public safety but rather a beloved member of the community
who is sorely missed. Letters to the parole board MUST refrain from
describing Sundiata as a political prisoner. It is also advised letters
refrain from admonishing or criticizing the parole board about their
review process.
Sundiata appreciates you! We do too!

Chairwoman Volette C. Ross
New Jersey State Parole Board
P.O. Box 862
Trenton NJ 08625
Chairwoman Ross:
I am writing this letter concerning Sundiata Acoli,
NJ#54859/Fed#39794-066, who is eligible for parole February of 2010. I
strongly encourage you to grant his parole request.
Sundiata's age is a strong reason to grant parole. In January 2010,
Sundiata will be 73 years old. He has been incarcerated for 36 years and
has served his sentence. Elderly prisoners' recidivism rates are extremely
low and they are highly unlikely to commit a crime once released. In
addition, elderly prisoners require more intensive medical care to remain
healthy, which is an added cost to the prison system.
Sundiata's prison record has been impeccable. Not only has he not had any
violations or write-ups in decades, he is a talented painter, writer and
educator. He has worked with high school and college classes across the
country, providing information and insight, as well as providing support
to other prisoners who want to further their education.
Sundiata himself has a very impressive educational and work background,
having worked at NASA in the 1960s as a computer programmer. He left that
job to travel to the South to register Blacks to vote during the Civil
Rights movement.
Sundiata has expressed remorse for his involvement in the circumstance
that has led to his incarceration. I believe with all of my heart that if
he is released, he will be an asset to the community, one that is sorely
needed.
Sundiata is a father and a grandfather, and his greatest desire is to get
to watch his grandchildren grow up. Please help fulfill that desire.
Thank you for taking the time to read this letter.
Sincerely,
