OPIRG-Carleton presents as part of the tools for change workshop series:

WHAT I LEARNED IN CLASS TODAY
Discussing Indigenous Struggles in the Classroom

Workshop 1: Social Position

When: Tuesday, October 20, 6 pm
Where: Carleton University,OPIRG-Carleton Office, 326 University centre
(upstairs from Ziggy's hair salon on the second floor and downstairs from
the CUSA
office on the 4th)

Classroom discussions of indigenous struggles often leave students
feeling alienated and angry. Though troubling, these situations often
go unreported and unresolved, affecting students' abilities to
function in classes and in their coursework. These workshops are
intended to help both aboriginal and non aboriginal people understand
the impacts and consequences of social position and dominant
understandings of indigenous peoples that can contribute to
problematic incidents that occur in the classroom context. Through
discussion, activities and video, this project aims to foster a more
culturally sensitive and understanding learning environment that addresses
notions of privilege. Everyone is welcome.

Part of a series of four workshops, including Social Position,
Tokenization, Addressing Classroom Incidents Inside the Classroom, and
Improving the Classroom Situation: Thinking Through Potential
Strategies. Visit http://www.whatilearnedinclasstoday.com for more info.
