* Anti-Racism in Education: Missing in Action
*
The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA) is preparing to release a
special edition of its regular publication Our Schools/Ourselves (OS/OS).
Edited by CCPA Research Associate Charles C. Smith who has also
authored *Crisis,
Conflict and Accountability: Racial Profiling and Law Enforcement in
Canada*(CCPA 2007), this edition of OS/OS will focus on the current
state of
anti-racism in the curriculum and school life of primary and secondary
institutions. The current working title Anti-Racism in Education: Missing
in Action suggests that, despite evidence indicating inequities in resource
allocations to and educational outcomes of Aboriginal and racialized
peoples, there seems to be an across-the-country ignoring of the importance
of anti-racism policy, curriculum and focus on the development of teachers
and school administrators.
In Nova Scotia and Ontario, for example, despite the racialized impact of
zero tolerance policies in schools resulting in the inequitable suspensions
and expulsions of Aboriginal and racialized students, there has been no
clear focus on introducing an anti-racist perspective into school
decision-making. As well, the internal school board and media debates in
Toronto on the established of an Afrocentric school made evident the dearth
of critical thinking about the abundance of research that identified the
need for such a school. Rather, public debate tended to focus on whether or
not such a school was a return to the days of segregation.
There are, no doubt, other contemporary examples of the need for anti-racist
approaches to education in other provinces. As such, this edition of OS/OS
seeks to identify these challenges and to offer alternative perspectives,
models and opportunities aimed at re-introducing and/or reinforcing the
importance of anti-racism in all levels of education across Canada.
To this end, the CCPA is putting out this call for abstracts. Interested
individuals should email their thoughts in no less than 500 words indicating
the article they wish to write and how it will address the themes of this
issue of OS/OS. All abstracts must be submitted by October 31, 2009
to *Charles
C. Smith at charlescsmith at sympatico.ca*. Any inquiries regarding this can
also be sent to the same email address.
Authors whose abstracts have been accepted will be notified by the end of
November 2009 and will then have to complete their papers by no later than
March 16, 2010 as this edition of OS/OS is scheduled for release in the
spring of 2010. OS/OS is a very accessible and self-defines as a "popular"
journal. In this regard, articles selected for publication can range in
style but should be readily accessible by diverse readers, including
students. Also, the overall length of articles should be between
2,000-4,000 words and young writers are encouraged to submit their thoughts
for consideration.
