Join the call to:
SHUT DOWN CANSEC 2009!
Confront those who profit from War and Genocide!

Wednesday, May 27th
Central Park (Bank @ Patterson)
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+
Peoples Global Action Ottawa invites all individuals and groups opposed to
genocide, occupation and war profiteering to join us in
organizing opposition to CANSEC 2009.
We will gather and march from Central Park to Lansdowne Park, site of this
year's Arms Fair, to confront war profiteers as they arrive for the CANSEC
Evening Reception, which runs from 5:00pm-7:00pm. The Evening
Reception is a black-tie affair, where war profiteers and government
representatives from around the world cut deals on cluster bomb
purchases and discuss the latest developments in white phosphorus
munitions.
WHAT IS CANSEC?
CANSEC is Canada's largest Arms Fair, this year featuring nearly 300
companies displaying the latest in weapons, surveillance, and 'security'
technology. It brings together weapons manufacturers and
government representatives from around the world, with the aim of
increasing sales of the newest methods of raining death and despair on
civilian populations.
In particular, companies that directly profited from the recent invasion
of Gaza will be present and proudly displaying the technologies that
killed 1,400 Palestinian men, women, and children.
These companies include Israeli weapons manufacturers such as Soltam,
makers of white phosphorous munitions, and Elbit Inc., there to sell their
"Lizard system" which "provides munitions guidance towards
laser
designated targets". Other Israeli corporations that are members of
CANSEC
include Elisra, Israeli Aircraft Industries, Israeli Military Industries,
Rafael, and Simigon.
Of course, the CANSEC's perennially blood-soaked North American
corporate members will be present again this year, including Boeing,
Raytheon, Northrup Grumman, General Electric and Blackwater.
Just as significant are the dozens of smaller corporations that
produce systems and parts for assembly by the larger, more well-known
war profiteers. Many of these smaller companies are based here in
Canada. For example, there are more than 50 Canadian companies
contributing to the construction of 3 major weapons systems used by
the Israel Airforce: the F-16 and F-15 fighter jets, and the AH-64
attack helicopter. It is these weapons, many of whose parts are
manufactured here in Canada, that the Israeli military used when
committing possible war crimes in Gaza, such as the death of more than
50 civilians during the aerial bombardment of two UN schools.
Further, while CANSEC has taken place in Ottawa for the past 8 years,
the relocation of this event from the provincially-owned Ottawa
Congress Centre to the city-owned Lansdowne Park, is particularly
problematic. This event violates a 20 year-old municipal bylaw
prohibiting arms shows from being held on city-owned property. In
preparation for CANSEC 2009, this bylaw was sidestepped by City
managers, who claimed that, due to Ottawa's amalgamation, the bylaw no
longer applies. The most notable proponent of the relocation was Mayor
Larry O'Brien, founder and current Board Member of Calian, an
exhibitor at CANSEC 2009.
For all these reasons, we invite all groups, organizations and individuals
to join us in opposing CANSEC 2009. Bring your noisemakers, placards,
photographs and props as we march to confront those who profit from
genocide, war, and death.
OCCUPATION ANYWHERE, RESISTANCE EVERYWHERE!

The small Algonquin community of Barriere Lake has been defending the land
and its territory for a long, long time. Twenty years ago it fought the
government and the lumber companies destruction of the land and the water
by blockading logging roads, as well as highway 117. This political
campaign had many positive results, one of which was the Trilateral
Agreement, a landmark resource sharing agreement between the BL Algonquin
and the government that does not sacrifice BL Aboriginal Rights or Title
to the their territory. Since then, the government has continually tried
to scrap the Trilateral Agreement. It has also actively interfered in
BLs leadership selection process in such a way that it continually
supports members of BL who are friendly to the government and who will not
fight to have the Trilateral implemented.

3) Walk 4 Justice
Good day everyone, We hope today finds you all in good health and spirits.
We are writing all of you supporters of the Missing and Murdered women and
the Walk4Justice. We would like to tell you that the W4J is walking again.
We will be walking to honor all the Missing and Murdered women from the
Highway of Tears, the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, across British
Columbia and Canada. Our goal is to rally and raise awareness of this
escalating violence towards women. The Statistics are rising at an alarming
rate since 2000 and we have to stop it! It is getting so dangerous for all
women these days. It is time to take back our streets and communities and
say no more!
We will be leaving on May 29, 2009 from the Downtown Eastside Women's Center
at 302 Columbia Street after breakfast at 8:00am.
We will rally at all major stops and arrive in Prince Rupert on June 22,
2009. Our route plan and details will be posted soon on face book and
through email.
We are in dire need of volunteers throughout all the communities to come out
and support the walkers. There will be at least 12 walkers.
We still need donations of shoes, camping gear, phone cards, emergency
equipment, medical supplies and cash for gas, food and accommodations.
Cheques can be sent to Don Bain, re: Walk4Justice, at the Union of BC Indian
Chiefs, Suite 500- 342 Water Street, Vancouver, BC V6B 1B6, phone
604-684-0231.
At this time we would like to thank each and every one of you who continue
to support the Walk4Justice initiative and are much honored you have chosen
to be a part of this historical journey to Justice. We look forward to
hearing from all of you. We pray that you and your families remain safe and
healthy through these tumultuous times. Prayers to all loved ones and their
families.

4) You are on Indian Land
a little bit of history:
http://intercontinentalcry.org/you-are-on-indian-land/
You Are on Indian Land was one of the first films in Canada to give
voice to the concerns of Indigenous People.
Produced in 1969, the film documents a protest that was led by Mohawks
from the Haudenosaunee community of Akwesasne on December 20, 1968.
At the time, community members were being forced to pay duty on purchases
they made in the United States, despite the fact that the Jay Treaty of
1794, also known as the Treaty of Amity, Commerce and Navigation,
affirmed that they were not required to do so.
The issue surrounding the Treaty has yet to be resolved, as a protest
earlier this month reminds us.
The recent protestwas quite different from the one that took place 40
years ago. In 68 members from the community blocked off the bridge
linking Canada to the United states, which literally cuts through
Akwesasne. Confrontation ensued.
While the news media focused on altercations with the police, says
Albert Ohayonas on the NFB website, filmmaker Mort Ransen took a decidedly
different approach. Ransen showed what led to these altercations and let
the Mohawks of the Reserve speak for themselves and tell their own story.

5) Dominion/Media Co-op Olympics Coverage: What do you want to see?
SUMMARY: to add your ideas for critical Olympics coverage and read what
others have written, visit: http://mediacoop.ca/olympics/coverage
*
*"In Canada, you will find a nation that works every day towards creating
the conditions of the Olympic ideal."* --Jean Chretien
The "Olympic Ideal" is part of one of the worlds most successful marketing
campaigns, built around concepts that almost everyone can agree upon:
world-class amateur sport and peaceful competition.
But a rising chorus of critical voices say that the Olympics are deeply
implicated in the expropriation of land, money and resources. From movements
demanding "No Olympics on Stolen Native Land" to angry business owners,
resistance to the Olympics economic and social agenda is growing.
The Olympics budget includes a billion dollars for security. A billion
dollars each will be spent on a new convention centre, a larger highway to
Whistler, and SNC Lavalin's rail link from the Vancouver airport to
downtown.
In the political and economic maneuvres leading up to the 2010 Olympics, a
different "ideal" has been revealed ? one of exclusive contracts,
sponsorship deals, displacement, social cleansing, and corruption. At times,
sport seems like an afterthought.
Many of the real stories behind the Olympics remain to be told.
The Media Co-op and The Dominion want to know what kinds of critical
coverage you want to see. Add your ideas as a researcher, a resident, or a
reader, and check out what idea others are contributing by visiting our
online discussion:
