The debaters 

ELLEN GABRIEL was chosen by the People of the Longhouse and then her
community to be a spokesperson for them during the 1990 "Oka" Crisis.  She
now serves as president of the Quebec Native Women's Association.  

ROBERT FOX has served as Executive Director of Oxfam Canada since July 2005.
In that time, he has led a renewal process that has seen Oxfam Canada adopt
women's rights and gender equality as the central focus for its program,
policy, campaign and advocacy work.   

JANE DOE is the woman who, after a twelve year legal battle, successfully
sued the Toronto Police for negligence and gender discrimination in the
investigation of her rape. Jane Doe is also a teacher, community activist
and author. Her book The Story of Jane Doe (Random House, 2003) was
nominated for numerous awards and is on the curriculum of several university
and college courses.

DILANI MOHAN is one of the founding members of The Miss G__ Project for
Equity in Education, a grassroots organization devoted to the elimination of
sexism and the promotion of active citizenship among youth. The Miss G__
Project is currently trying to get Women's and Gender Studies added to the
Ontario Secondary School Curriculum.  She is currently studying law at the
University of Ottawa.  

JESSICA YEE is a Mohawk youth who was called to the line of action by
raising controversy in her Catholic school.  Jessica is the founder and
director of the Native Youth Sexual Health Network, a North America-wide
organization working on issues of healthy sexuality, cultural competency,
youth empowerment, reproductive justice, and sex positivity by and for
Native youth.

The debate moderator

 

JOANNA KERR is the Director of Policy and Outreach for Oxfam Canada.  She
has advised numerous foundations and international women's rights
organizations. She was Executive Director of the international feminist
membership organization Association for Women's Rights in Development for
seven years.  In the 90s she managed the gender program at the North-South
Institute.
