Legal Update following SHUT DOWN CANSEC 2009!
On Wednesday May 27, 2009 a group of concerned individuals and groups came together under the umbrella of Peoples Global Action Ottawa to voice our dissent against weapons manufacturers, traders, distributors and their clientele including government representatives from around the world who were welcomed by the city of Ottawa and the Canadian government, and to confront those who profit from war and genocide at Canada's largest Weapons Fair, CANSEC. Our demonstration was disrupted by the actions of police which have led to the establishment of a legal support committee.
Goals
This committee has three main and interrelated goals:
1. to provide legal support to the person who was arrested on May 27, 2009, as well as for any others who may subsequently be charged and/or arrested in relation to the actions of that day;
2. to gather information regarding the demeanor of the person arrested prior to as well as during and following the arrest;
3. to gather information regarding the demonstration, including the actions and language of the police toward the person who was arrested as well as toward others.
Call for Photo, Video, or Witness Statements
We are therefore calling for any photo, video, or witness statements related to the action, arrest, police actions and/or statements made. Even if you feel what you saw/recorded is irrelevant and minor, please get in touch with the legal committee. A detail which appears minor may, in the end, turn out to be very important. Please submit these to the stopcansec at gmail.com and cc yhameed at hfeb.ca the lawyer for the accused.
Filing Police Complaints
As a result of police actions as well as sexist, racist and otherwise oppressive language used against us, we will also be filing a police complaint. If you would like to file a police complaint you can do so by following the guidelines and/ or standard form letter at http://www.ottawapolice.ca/en/serving_ottawa/compliment_complaint/complaint_processing.cfm
Since these complaints may be useful for legal purposes, please forward a copy of your letter to the above email addresses.
