*1b) Community Anti-Uranium Meeting, with Guest Speaker, Susanne Lauten.*
Where: Maberly Hall, just north of Hwy 7 at Maberly, ON
When: July 26th, 2 - 4 p.m.
Why: To inform and educate people living on water as to the risks inherent
in uranium exploration and mining and to announce and explain the 2009
Watershed Awareness Project.
Who: Guest, Susanne Lauten is a professional photographer and writer,
recently retired. For six months of the year, she calls her rustic island
retreat in Haliburton County, her home. She founded the network Cottagers
against Uranium Mining and Exploration, CUME, and is now working full time
to protect all Ontarians from the dangers of uranium mining and
exploration. Susanne has attracted extensive media attention, including
interviews with CHEX TV, the Globe & Mail, the Toronto Star, Cottage Life
magazine, and CBC radio’s World Report. A recent newspaper report described
her as “a petite scrappy woman whose tenacity is evident in every word she
speaks.”
In an effort to involve them in the protection of their local environment,
The Watershed Awareness Project will reach out to people living in the
Mississippi watershed, as they will be most affected by the ongoing
exploration and proposed mine at Robertsville, north of Sharbot Lake. "Our
team will provide material that describes the area and how it will be
impacted. Our intention is to inform the wider population about the issues
so that they will be able to respond to each issue as the mining process
evolves," says Ormond Lee of CCAMU.
The Community Coalition Against Mining Uranium (CCAMU) is a grassroots
organization based in the Sharbot Lake area.
In the summer of 2007, the First Nations and non-native communities of
Eastern Ontario came together to create a powerful force that has gained
much attention worldwide. Aboriginal community members secured the gate at
the Robertsville site, north of Sharbot Lake, halting exploration, which led
to the lengthy incarceration of Ardoch Elder Bob Lovelace, on civil contempt
of court charges. As well, Donna Dillman, a Lanark County grandmother
refused food for 68 days to protest the exploration and to request a
moratorium. They join many thousands of individuals who have signed
petitions, written letters and communicated with elected officials to
express our concerns. Our community, together with 23 municipalities and
other groups, continue to call for a moratorium on uranium exploration and
mining in eastern Ontario.

*Stolen Sisters: A documentary**
Stolen Sisters is a documentary about Missing and Murdered Aboriginal Women
in Canada, inspired by the 2005 report by Amnesty International
entitled, “Stolen Sisters: A Human Rights Response to Discrimination and
Violence against Indigenous Women in Canada.” (Canada/2007/60 min)
The discussion will be facilitated by *Bridget Tolley.*
Bridget Tolley is a member of the Kitigan Zibi First Nation in Quebec. Her
mother was struck and killed by the Quebec Police on October 6th,
2001.She believes that there was homicidal negligence on the part of Surete
du Quebec officers and is presently working on a complete
review of the investigation, arguing that homicide files were filled with
inaccuries and incongruent reports and that police procedures
were not conducted according to accepted practices. Bridget feels the
dignity and respect of the deceased and family members was greatly
breached by all police officers and the investigation team involved.

*3a) OPP threatens arrests at Site 41, Protesters Will Not Yield
**July 16, 2009*
This morning, four OPP officers verbally warned people blocking the gates at
controversial dump Site 41 in Tiny Township to leave immediately or face
arrest, putting Site 41 opponents on high alert. Police had previously said
they had ‘no issues’ with the ongoing protest. The protesters were directed
to immediately leave the gates or risk being arrested for Mischief under the
Criminal Code which carries penalties of up to $5000 fine and/or six months
in jail. Local residents, farmers, cottagers and First Nations people have
blocked the four gates to Site 41 around the clock for the last 10 days.
“We have said all along that we will not let construction work continue on
this dump, that we will protect the water,” said Vicki Monague, one of the
Anishnabe Kwei from Christian Island that have been camped at Site 41 for
more than two months. “We have maintained good relations with the police,
the county and the contractors. We let the security guards in and out and we
allow access for the pump contractor and various engineering and Ministry
people to monitor the site and keep it safe,” said Monague, “and the county
is welcome to come anytime and remove its machinery to put to work off
site.”
“Just yesterday the police said they had no issues with the protest. What
has changed?” asks Council of Canadians chairperson Maude Barlow. The
Council of Canadians is urging the OPP and local police not to arrest
anyone, but rather let the matter be debated at Simcoe County council
instead. “The way to resolve this is not by arresting peaceful protesters.
This highlights the urgent need for an emergency session of Simcoe County
Council, and an immediate moratorium on Site 41 construction.”
“A woman in her eighties was here blockading with us yesterday and she said
to me 'If I am going to get arrested once in my life it will be to protect
the water.’” said Monague. “At her age, she is really protecting the water
for the next generations. This touched me very deeply because that is my
role as an Anishnabe Kwei.”
Dump site 41 was originally rejected as a landfill site in the late 1980s by
the Ministry of the Environment but their decision was overturned through an
Order in Council by the Liberal government of David Peterson. For the last
two decades, the local agricultural community has fought to protect the
Alliston aquifer that lies beneath the proposed dump site, which contains
the purest ground water ever tested. Serious questions about the theoretical
modeling in the engineering reports used to select the site have been
reinforced by real facts revealed by the actual construction of the site.

*3b) CONFENIAE Condemns Decree 1780 and the Militarization of Their
Territories
**Quito, Ecuador July 9, 2009.
*
The Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of the Ecuadorian Amazon
"CONFENIAE" composed of 10 nationalities, Siona, Secoya, Cofán, Waorani,
Shuar, Achuar, Shiwiar, Kichwa, Ando and Zápara considers that "the
prevailing arrogant and dictatorial political regime of the current
Government of President Correa, violates the precepts of Constitutional
Rights of the Republic, the principles of the ILO Convention 169, and the
rights affirmed in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of
Indigenous Peoples".
They further note that "the regime of Rafael Correa is provoking political
and social disorder in the Amazon Region disregarding Ancestral Territorial
Rights of Indigenous Nationalities and Peoples, by the intrusion of military
forces and surrender to the national and transnational oil and mining
companies of our territories, with a clear plan to create the looting,
subjugation and misery of our communities".
The national government through Decree 1780 of 12 June 2009, published in
Official Registry 620, intends to re-evangelize and submit the Amazonian
Nationalities to a policy imposing the totalitarian regime of foreign
religions as part of macabre plan to exterminate the identity, existence and
Self-Determination of the Ancestral Nationalities and Peoples, notes the
disseminated press release.
The resolution of the CONFENIAE signed by its newly elected president, Tito
Puanchir, states:
1. We guarantee Direct Actions by the 10 Indigenous Nationalities of the
Amazon Region and hold the Government of Rafael Correa responsible for the
adverse consequences that are generated as a result of the indigenous
struggle to defend our territorial rights, defending ourselves against the
government’s goal to disorient and break our organizational structure and
the way of life of our Nationalities.
2. We reaffirm definitely not to allow the practice or implementation on our
territories of the system of Modus Vivendi signed between Ecuador and the
Holy See and the additional agreement signed on July 24, 1937, which
empowers the missionaries of any religious cult to enter our territories and
evangelize, and to create structures within our territories with privileges
and contracts with the Ministries of State to conduct development projects
inconsistent with the same Decree 1780 of June 12, 2009
3. We denounce and demand before the international organizations of Human
Rights and Rights of Indigenous Peoples of the United Nations, OAS, Andean
Parliament, COICA, the UN Special Rapporteur, Amnesty International,
Survival International, Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and ILO,
that the government of President Rafael Correa of Ecuador respect our
process of Self Determination and the implementation of our Autonomous
Territorial Governments.
