The Andean-Amazonian Strike in Peru is now taking place July 7, 8, 9.
On the first day, the strike completely shut down Arequipa in southern
Peru, led by the teachers union.

The Panamerican Highway was blockaded as well as in Chincha. Also
complete shutdowns of the cities of Puno, Ayacucho, and Juliaca in the
Andes.

In Bagua, in the Amazon where the killings of indigenous people took
place, a march was prohibited by the police. Rather than confronting
the police, the thousands of demonstrators went around them to meet in
the town center. In Lima public transportation was shut down. Tupac
Amaru Avenue was blockaded while thousands gathered in a demonstration
in the Plaza 2 de Mayo.

The demands of the demonstrators are: Repeal of the Free Trade Agreement
with the United States. Return of Alberto Pizango, head of the Amazonian
movement, now exiled in Nicaragua. Resignation of the cabinet of Prime
Minister Yehude Simon, responsable for the killing in Bagua on June 5th.
