2a) Report from an IPSMO member who visited Peace Caravan, July 3, 2009
*
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On 1 July 2009, 15 of us from Ottawa went to Akwesasne in a trip organized
by IPSMO to show solidarity with the indigenous people of that territory.
We were joined by about a dozen people from Montréal, organized by No One
Is Illegal. The previous couple of days, a Six Nations Peace Caravan had
arrived.
Despite some controversy surrounding the caravan that dissuaded many
people from coming on these trips, the Peace Caravan and settler
solidarity visits were warmly welcomed by Akwesasne residents. We enjoyed
plentiful food and traditional songs, and listened to speeches of
representatives from Six Nations, Kahnewake, Grassy Narrows, Mapuche, and
the Akwesasne Womens Fire which organized hosting for the event and
support for the occupation of the CBSA posts.
The new Grand Chief, who had just had been elected, updated those
assembled on the situation. He emphasized that the arming of CBSA agents
was only one of many grievances (at least 12) they had
with government departments. He told us that a process had started for
negotiation, beginning with (relatively) senior representatives of the
Canadian government meeting chiefs half way. Notably, he
observed that local Cornwall business leaders were not angry with the
Akwesasne Mohawks at all and sympathized with them.

*2b) Give-and-take on guns in Akwesasne- MNN, July 4, 2009*
**
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MNN. July 4, 2009. According to Mike Mitchell, the new band councilor, we
hope he doesn’t mean that the Indigenous give and the colonists take! He
has announced a give-and-take style negotiation with Canada. The armed
border guards want to come into Akwesasne in exchange for something. He
suggests the Canada Border Services agents CBSA could give by taking some
cultural sensitivity training. If they become sensitive to us, our laws and
our rights, they will get off the island and never come back. The colony of
Canada has no legal business manning their store in the middle of our
community.
The Canada and US ultimatum is that they are going to keep the two bridges
onto Kawenoke on Cornwall Island closed until we let them come in with guns.
As a band councilor, Mitchell has been a longtime anti-Confederacy
sovereignty advocate. He seems willing to compromise the Mohawk nation
position.
Mitchell wants to make it look like he settled our valid complaint and come
out looking like the hero. Some of the human rights complaints will be
settled, he said. He wants to make the economically dying cities of
Cornwall Ontario and Massena New York happy.
Any deal Mitchell makes will only apply to those 350 people who voted for
him, who obviously support the colonial band council system and their goal
to undermine us. They are trying to set a precedent for outsiders to patrol
other Indigenous communities.
This is a nation-to-nation issue. Canada and US both know that this is a
Rotino’shonni:onwe movement based on our sovereignty, which is supported by
international law. A majority have to give our fully informed consent which
we will never.
Watch the following short video linked to this article. You can see how
happy Mohawks feel about being free of the abuse and brutality of the border
guards!
<http://www.standard-freeholder.com/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=1637452>
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUeNtM6qakk
There is talk of putting a temporary Canadian customs on the Cornwall
Ontario side at the foot of the Bridge. This hasn’t been brought to the
Mohawks. At least the Canadian government recognizes they can’t put guns on
the island in the middle of Kawenoke.
Not mentioned is that this too is Mohawk territory which is under dispute.
The Mohawks have given the message that we are not going to be intimidated.
This is being acknowledged by the non-native community. They now know that
we cannot be pushed around anymore.
We must give credit to Dooley Thompson, the former chief, and his
supporters, for standing up for the people forcefully and eloquently.
Hopefully Mike Mitchell learns from his predecessor that the non-natives
can’t walk over us. We are in the right. We don’t want guns like the
others. We have to take a stand and stay with it. The cutting off of
traffic to Kawenoke has allowed us to feel relieved from the years of
intimidation. It’s a vacation from the abuse that has been going on for a
long time.
The Mohawks message to the world is that tyranny has to be resisted. With
the move towards global totalitarianism by the few elite thugs and their
military goons, the Mohawks, our brothers, sisters, friends, allies and
supporters are showing everybody how to defend themselves without using
violence. Only the truth!
******
The Akwesasne Women's Fire remains in good spirits and smiling a lot when
the Peace Caravan arrived. The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne and the St.
Regis Mohawk Tribe on behalf of their bosses, Canada and US, tried to
sidetrack the public into thinking they weren't welcome. We sent out a
message inviting the public to join us.

*2c) Tyendinaga Support Committee Report, July 3, 2009**
***
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update: Support and Stay Tuned:
Struggle Continues Against Armed Border Guards in Akwesasne
------------------------------------------------------------
(June 29th, 2009) On June 1st, the Harper government’s decision to
allow Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) border guards carry
sidearms was scheduled to be enforced, but the community resistance of
Akwesasne Mohawks resulted in the closing of the border by the
Canadian government. Since then, the Mohawks of Akwesasne continue to
resist the imposition of armed border guards by the CBSA. Throughout
the Mohawk Nation, actions have been taken demanding that the Canadian
government enter into negotiations on the issue.
On Sunday June 7, Mohawks shut down the Skyway Bridge, which links
Prince Edward County to the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory near
Belleville, Ontario, in solidarity with the community of Akwesasne.
Despite tremendous police pressure, Tyendinaga Mohawks held the bridge
until early Friday morning when local police and the OPP moved in and
ended the blockade. Thirteen people were charged and several Mohawk
protesters sustained minor injuries. Two people were taken to
hospital, but were later released into police custody.
Out of the thirteen arrested, three Mohawks are still in jail. All of
them are being held at the Quinte Regional Detention Centre. Paul
VanHooser and Charles Kloestra have been denied bail and are detained
until trial on mischief charges. The Crown is seeking a 6-month
sentence for each of them. Shawn Brant, who was still living under a
conditional sentence for participating in previous blockades, is also
being held in custody at least until he serves out his conditional
sentence in prison, until the end of July. He is charged with
mischief and breaching his conditions. A trial date has not yet been
set in his case, and there is no decision yet on whether he will be
held in custody until trial.
After the OPP ended the Skyway Bridge blockade, women from the
community of Tyendinaga returned to the site and retook the bridge for
the remainder of the day, as a further show of resolve to see that
this issue is dealt with in good faith, through respectful
nation-to-nation negotiation.
Please show solidarity by writing to Paul VanHooser, Charles Kloestra,
and Shawn Brant still in custody at:

*Tamil Refugees face deportation from Canada- Stefan Christoff
*
* Hour: Tamil refugees face deportation from Canada
http://www.hour.ca/news/news.aspx?iIDArticle=17582
by Stefan Christoff
After months of intense warfare in northern Sri Lanka, thousands of Tamil
civilians are dead and tens of thousands more displaced - many to Sri Lankan
military-controlled displacement camps.
Now Tamil refugees in Montreal fear they will be deported back to Sri Lanka,
and an uncertain future.
Although the federal government expressed "dismay and displeasure" over
the Sri Lankan government's refusal last week to allow Liberal foreign
affairs critic
Bob Rae to enter Sri Lanka, they continue to deport Tamil refugees in
Canada.
"Today the situation in Sri Lanka for Tamils is very bad. Canada is going to
send me back to war and a government in Colombo that doesn't respect my
rights as a Tamil," says Ratnam Thurai, a Tamil refugee who faces
deportation.
In Montreal, the Tamil Action Committee is working with numerous Tamil
refugees fighting deportation orders. They estimate 200 Tamil refugees
currently face
deportation from Canada to Sri Lanka.
"Canada is deporting Tamils to a war zone," says Jared Will, an immigration
lawyer working on Tamil refugee cases in Montreal. "It is particularly
appalling because the government has clearly recognized the situation in Sri
Lanka, through setting up a special application process for refugee
applicants in Sri Lanka, while still carrying out deportations. The
hypocrisy is so
clear."
Tens of thousands of Canadian Tamils staged multiple outspoken protests over
the past few months against the Sri Lankan military offensive, including a
dramatic sit-in at the Parliament buildings in Ottawa which lasted weeks.
Thousands of protesters in Toronto blockaded the Gardiner Expressway in
Toronto.
"Because we are Tamils coming from Canada, the government in Sri Lanka
will be even more aggressive towards us if we are deported, because there
were so
many protests in Canada against the war on the Tamil people in Sri Lanka.
The
government views Canada as sympathetic to the Tamil Tigers."
Local activists and lawyers in Montreal hope to halt Ratnam Thurai's
deportation, which is set to take place once his Sri Lankan travel documents
are issued. Meanwhile, a larger community campaign against all Tamil
deportations is also gathering force.
Both the Tamil Action Committee and immigration lawyers involved in the case
have called for a moratorium on deportations to Sri Lanka, similar to
existing
moratoriums for countries in conflict, including Iraq and Congo.
"All Tamils in Sri Lanka today face the same problems," continues Ratnam
Thurai. "Just being Tamil we face discrimination from the Sri Lankan
government and our language and culture is not respected in the country."
Concerns are warranted according to the UN. Shortly after the war
subsided, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon visited Sri Lanka and spoke of
the humanitarian
disaster facing Tamil civilians and the "unacceptably high" case of civilian
casualties in the Tamil populated areas of northern Sri Lanka, perpetrated
by
both sides of the conflict. Refugee centres and hospitals trapped in the war
zone endured Sri Lankan military aerial bombardments and, to date, the
government in Colombo has made it impossible for the Red Cross and other
humanitarian organizations and media to access the zone.
Tamil activists in Montreal say the Sri Lankan government's refusal to allow
human rights monitors and Canadian government officials to enter the country
makes them fear for their Tamil family and friends in Sri Lanka, as well as
those currently facing deportation from Canada.
"The international community has to give assurance that Tamils can live
peacefully and live in freedom in Sri Lanka," insists Kamala
Jegatheeswaran, a spokesperson for the Tamil Action Committee. "Until our
rights as Tamils
in Sri Lanka are guaranteed then there should be a moratorium on
deportations to Sri
Lanka - absolutely no deportations, they must stop."

*4) Poetry *
'They Came' by James Pliny- poem commemorating lives of those died in the
Peruvian Amazon
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*Dear IPSMO,
I'm a UK-based poet and have written a poem to commemorate the recent,
tragic violence in the Peruvian Amazon - which I see, via your website, you
have taken action on.
The poem particularly criticises the failure of people to speak out against
the genocide of indigenous peoples around the world over the last 500 years.
I offer it as an acknowledgment of what has happened in the past, and as a
call to thought and action for doing what we can to stop it from happening
in the future.
The poem is below. It's called 'They came' and is a re-working of a poem
with the same title, attributed to the German pastor Martin Niemoller.
Please forward it your contacts or use it in any way you see fit.
Kind regards,
James Pliny*
*'They came'*
First they came for the tribes' land,
said it was empty and stole it,
but we did not speak up because we were not tribesmen,
and our laws encouraged it.
Then they came for what was under the tribes' land,
said it was rich and dug it up,
but we did not speak up because we were not tribesmen,
and our economy needed it.
Then they came for the tribes' culture,
said it was primitive and destroyed it,
but we did not speak up because we were not tribesmen,
and our own culture confirmed it.
Finally, they came for the tribes themselves,
said they weren’t real people and killed them,
but still we did not speak up because we were not tribesmen,
and our science proved it.
There was no need to come for us
because we were on their side.
No longer!
Now we will speak up!
*James Pliny 2009*
Fireside Chat with *Canadians for Action on Climate Change
*
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
**Hello Everyone,
In the absence of a formal introductory email, announcing the formation
of *Canadians for Action on Climate Change*, which we have not had time to
prepare due to the multitude of campaigns that we are involved with locally
at the moment, we thought that we would let you know about this scheduled
event that we are involved with, and we think you may be interested in, and
also provide you with some insight into our objectives. Our new organization
has risen out of the *Council of Canadians | London Chapter | Environment &
Climate Change Committee* that has been in existence for about two years and
has championed many environmental and climate change connected initiatives.
Our mission statement, in brief, is at the bottom of this communication and
our hope is that you find yourself sharing some or all of the values stated
with us. Please take a look at this when you have a moment. We know everyone
else is as busy as we are and appreciate that your time is precious.
Please take a look at the webinar event announcement as well and let us know
if you would like to contribute to the success of this event or perhaps just
listen in, and get to know us a bit better. We've confirmed 200 toll-free
lines for this 'fireside chat' - so lots of room for people all across
Canada. We hope you will join in the discussions and invite your
colleagues/networks.
We are sure that the recognition of the challenges that we face on the
subject of climate change is leaving you with the same feelings that we
experience every day. And we hope that with the sharing of information,
resources and just the simple relief of knowing that there are people like
us that truly do care and are willing to engage in progressive campaigns and
actions, we can make a real difference and survive emotionally together.
All the Best,
Canadians for Action on Climate Change
*CHNET-Works! The Council of Canadians, and Canadians for Action on Climate
Change announce a Fireside Chat:*
(free-pan-Canadian discussion via telephone/internet for professionals from
community health and issue-related sectors)
*Gasping for Breath - Implementing Strong Anti-Idling Bylaws in Your
Community*
*Thursday July 9th, 1:00 - 2:30 PM Eastern Time
For more information/registration: www.chnet-works.ca*
This Fireside Chat will review and discuss the recent decision around
changes to existing anti-idling bylaw in the City of London. London Council
has not accepted the proposed changes (1 minute limit, between hot and cold
weather advisories) , if this was accepted, London would have had one of the
most progressive bylaws in Canada. Gordon McBean, world renowned
climatologist for the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction, appointed
member of Mayor’s Sustainable Energy Council in London, ON - has urged the
city of London to take action on all ways of reducing emissions as part of
national and global efforts to combat climate change. What is happening in
your community?
The issue of a drive-thru moratorium is a hot topic in many
municipalities across the nation - what is industry's response? Reminiscent
of the tobacco industry's response to anti-smoking efforts, ad campaigns are
being run in London and Comox BC intended to question the science or promote
'personal choice' around drive-thrus. Are they hoping to sway pubic opinion
and impede legislation? In the meantime, thousands of vehicles line up
everyday in drive-thrus spewing unnecessary pollution into the environment.
Empowerment is as much about community mobilization as high-level political
action. This is a local issue, with global consequences. Hundreds of leaders
are gathered in Geneva discussing climate change. Many are from the
developing world. The sense of urgency is palpable. We in the rich
countries created the problem with our heavy use of fossil fuels, yet the
people who will be most impacted will be the people in the poorest countries
who had little to do with creating the problem. We need strong leadership
at the federal and provincial levels, AND each of us need to make changes.
Municipalities need to find the political will to effectively implement
strong anti idling bylaws, to confront the enormity of Climate Change.
The most urgent need is to empower local government and local communities to
understand climate implications and to take action. Health professionals and
university academics have an important catalytic role. This fireside chat
will provide stats, perspectives and inspiration to take on this role. We
hope you will join in!
The topics of discussion in this Fireside Chat will be
1) Implementing a strong anti-idling bylaw in your community
2) The contribution to Pollution
3) The contribution to climate change,
4) Drive-thrus
5) Barriers: political partisan issues, denialism, lack of political will
and leadership
6) The crucial role of the health and academic sectors re: taking action on
Climate Change
Ontario's smog causes 9,500 deaths per year, medical association says. Of
these 1,000 occurred immediately after times of intense pollution.
The research on the human costs of pollution and pollution-related diseases
estimated that around 21,000 people in Canada will die from breathing in
toxic substances drifting in the air this year with 3,000 of those deaths
due to short-term exposure to smog.
