Protesters demand Barriere Lake chief be freed from jail

MONTREAL _ About two dozen supporters staged a peaceful protest
outside Quebec Premier Jean Charest's office on Thursday to demand
the release of an imprisoned native leader.

Traditional chief Benjamin Nottaway was sentenced last month to
45 days in jail for his role in native protests that blocked part of
a highway outside the Barriere Lake reserve.

The impoverished reserve about 300 kilometres north of Ottawa has
drawn riot police to the scene of road blockades over leadership of
the band.

The Barriere Lake reserve has also been involved in forestry
disputes stretching back more than a decade.

They include a protracted fight for a share of forestry and other
resource revenues estimated to be worth $100 million a year on
traditional Algonquin territory.

Elizabeth May, the leader of the Green party, and the Public
Service Alliance of Canada have also demanded that Nottaway be
freed.

Indian Affairs Minister Chuck Strahl officially recognized Chief
Casey Ratt and four councillors last January but that's facing a
legal challenge.

on APTN (http://www.aptn.ca/streaming/index.php?wmv=wednesday/six) at 2:45 in... which makes it nearly their headliner. pretty good coverage, pass it along!

I heard it suggested that people videorecord their own events, and the media can't be um trusted? to do the job you want for you, ie truthfully, without their own spin...

Sorry I wasn't there, I couldn't get into Ottawa, weather seemed pretty rough Wednesday too.

Is there a way to have 'virtual meetings'? ok, there is. let me rephrase. would people consider this sometimes an option?
