*OPP arrest elderly farmers and Indigenous land protectors at Site 41*.

The situation at Site 41 has changed--the police have begun arresting
peaceful protesters. Over the weekend, John Hawk, one of the young men from
Beausoleil FN and a spokesperson for the land protection efforts, was
arrested and charged with mischief and intimidation.

Early this week, a few elderly people were called by the OPP and told that
they were supposed to turn themselves into the police station--this included
a couple of 82 and 76 years old who have been around the blockade
consistently over the last months. On thursday morning, a caravan containing
as many as 200 people headed to the police station, accompanying the first
people who were to turn themselves in. They were given the similar
conditions to Hawk's, which were to not return to the protest site and not
to associate with the protest leaders.

After people had left the station and were traveling back to Elmvale and the
site, En route, Ann Ritchie-Nahuis, one of the protest leaders had her
vehicle surrounded by 3 police cruisers, was pulled over and arrested. Ann,
who refused to sign the conditions, is still in jail and will be up for bail
on Friday morning.

Thursday afternoon, Mohawk environmentalist Danny Beaton, who has been
involved for a while with Site 41 protests--presumably he is also being
charged with mischief. thursday evening,

Thursday night, a 22 year old Anishnabe man was arrested at his home.

Vicki Monague, protest camp spokesperson, is scheduled to turn herself in to
OPP Friday morning.

Vicki and Ann are two of the people named on the civil suit that accompanied
the temporary injunction against the protesters. The next court date
concerning injunctions against both the protesters and against work at the
dump site is next week on the 13th and 14th of August in Barrie.

"Tribe follows tribe, and nation follows nation, like the waves of the
sea. Your time of decay may be distant, but it will surely come, for even
the white man whose god walked with him and talked with him as friend with
friend, cannot be exempt from the common destiny. We may be brothers
after all. We will see."
