Carlos Amador et François Guindon de Rights Action seront à l’Université
d’Ottawa le 5 mai pour se prononcer contre la participation de l’entreprise
Goldcorp aux pratiques d'extraction minière irresponsables au Guatemala et
au Honduras.

Carlos, un leader communautaire et un écologiste de la région de la Vallée
de Siria du Honduras et François, un activiste québécois qui s’occupe
activement des questions reliées aux mines  et aux droits de la personne au
Guatemala, désirent exposer les dommages à l’environnement, à la santé et
les violations des droits humains causés par le géant minier canadien
Goldcorp en Amérique centrale. Ils veulent ainsi sensibiliser les
investisseurs clefs de cette transnationale (y compris le Régime de pension
du Canada RPC, celui de la FTQ et les nombreux autres fonds de pension à
travers le pays).

*Leur travail aura un écho particulier à l’Université d’Ottawa, où la
Faculté de gestion a récemment été renommée en l’honneur d’Ian Telfer,
président et directeur général de Goldcorp, bien que plusieurs voix se
soient élevées sur le campus pour dénoncer cette nomination.*

Honduran environmental leader Carlos Amador and Rights Action’s Francois
Guindon will at the University of Ottawa on May 5th to speak out against
Canada’s involvement in unethical mining practices in Guatemala and
Honduras.

Amador, a community leader and environmentalist from the mining-affected
Siria Valley region of Honduras, and Guindon, a Quebecois activist working
on mining and human rights issues in Guatemala, want to engage Canadians in
discussions on mining conflicts. They aim to uncover the environmental and
health harms and human rights violations by Canadian mining giant, Goldcorp,
in Central America, and to draw critical attention to key investors in the
company (including the Canadian Pension Plan and numerous pension funds
across the country).

*Their presentation will be of particular interest to the University of
Ottawa community : in 2007, many students had denounced the renaming of the
Faculty of Management after Goldcorp’s CEO Ian Telfer.*
