*IPSMO meeting*
*September 23, 2008*
*Fundraising Committee Report Back:*
Proposal to screen a film on John Trudell:
http://www.trudellthemovie.com/either last week of October or first 2
weeks of November. Proposal to split
funds raised three ways, between Tyendinaga, Six Nations and Barriere Lake.
Discussion
- concern that splitting funds three ways may reduce our
effectiveness a) in educating people, b) in collecting enough money to make
a difference to a given struggle
- should we have a "war chest" of funds for emergencies? IPSMO
Carleton has $300, we can talk about how/when to use this
Consensus: We will screen the film, preference for it to be early November
to leave time for Barriere Lake film planning (see below).

*Barriere Lake Update*
Montreal Solidarity group got in touch with some members of IPSMO
- after the news attention generated by racist remarks by Cannon's
aide (
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20080918.welxncanapolgy0918/BNStory/Front)
the Barriere Lake community and Montreal solidarity group are working
to
leverage the media attention to put pressure on politicians leading up to
election
- they are really pushing on actions over the next 3 weeks,
including a presence at an all-candidates meeting, meeting with Lawrence
Cannon and meeting with other candidates in Pontiac riding
- strong need for funds and people power right now
- there is open invite for us to visit the community. Anyone
interested in going, please email kimmackrael at gmail.com and let me know what
days you might be able to go.
- proposal to host film night with Barriere Lake representative and
poets
- Sylvia (teacher) has students willing to do letter writing
campaign
Consensus: We will host a movie/poetry/discussion night at Umi Café in early
October to educate ourselves/others and raise funds. Film is Algonquins of
Barriere Lake (http://video.google.ca/videoplay?docid=3486022596349494527),
40 minutes, done by U of Ottawa Law Students.
- Free Will to check with Umi Café for possible dates
- Kim to find film and check with BL to see if anyone is interested
in being present at the screening to speak briefly and answer questions
- Matt will create a poster
*October 18th anti war protest*
Starts at Tabaret Hall at 1pm, goes to Parliament
Update – some folks went to Ottawa Peace Coalition meeting last night,
suggested collaboration based on opposing imperialism abroad AND at
home...also interest in future joint fundraising event.
Suggestion that someone from Tyendinaga or (if not available) from our group
speak at the event to give an update on Tyendinaga
- Concern raised that we should not mix two different events. We still find
consensus to do this. May need to have more conversation on topic in future.
Consensus: Free Will to bottom line finding someone to speak or speaking
himself. Matt to create handout material
*October 31st (ish) – non violent direct action against CN rail *
Possibly Ottawa Central Railway. Based on civil suit against Shaun Brant and
2 others. We will discuss this further at next meeting.
*
*
*Walk for Justice Update*
- We raised about $500 between Umi poetry night and film screening.
- Walk for Justice still needs money to fund trips back home….
Suggestion that we could do a joint fundraiser working with one/some of the
following
o Ottawa Peace Coalition
o Native Women's Association
o Amnesty international Sisters in Spirit
- 2 girls missing from Maniwaki area reserve. We should act on this.
Angela will print posters and drop them off at Exile. We can pick them up at
Exile infoshop (256 Bank Street) and poster.
*Winnipeg** Defence of Land *
- large gathering, will included separate events for indigenous
folks and allies, then gathering points
- Proposal to have someone from IPSMO go, can we subsidize this?
Consensus: interest to have someone go, possibility for funding, we will
discuss further at next meeting.
*Six Nations Update*
- plan to be there still over the winter, will be needing blankets
etc
- Nicole (and maybe someone else?) will check in to see what else
they need, we may ask folks who come to John Trudell film night to give
donation of either money or blankets/other goods for Six Nations
- Will discuss further next week
*Chaudiere Project*
- we will discuss this next week
*Email list *
– we now have an email address of our own
– some high traffic on listserv, people asking to be removed
Consensus: we should have two lists, one for larger announcements, another
(higher traffic) for organizing
*Website*
Free Will to talk with Jonathan (who made Umi Café's website) about creating
one for us
*
*
*Board Game*
- suggestion to create board game based on land claims for
educational purposes!
- Angela will start on research, anyone who would like to help can
contact aschleihauf at gmail.com
*Zine*
- tabled for next week
*Carleton OPIRG tabling opportunity*
- opportunity to table with Carleton OPIRG between 11-3pm this
Thursday. Anyone who might be able to give some time should contact Angela
aschleihauf at gmail.com
*Announcements*
- October 7th meeting can't be in same location – depending on when
BL event happens, we may have the film night instead of that meeting
- We are part of IPSMO Carleton, so anyone can go to Carleton and
print stuff for free (but beware that printer is finicky)
- October 17 – Ottawa Friends of Tibet fundraiser… Nicole will send
out info
- Nicole has contact for fair trade tshirts and printing…we will
also consider second hand t's…
- Graeme will be taking time away from the group, but is still
available if we'd like to use his skills for a specific event. He'll be
looking at creating a land trust group in the winter…interested folks can
contact: onecocoon at gmail.com
