Hey y'all
For the sake of not wanting to sound redundant, please consider changing
"Aboriginal" to "Indigenous".
One small example:
http://www.taiaiake.com/28
"It's actually offensive to hear that term used in reference to First
Nations citizens," said Grand Council Chief John Beaucage. "Our Chiefs are
giving us direction to inform government agencies, NGOs, educators and media
organizations that they should discontinue using inappropriate terminology
when they are referring to the Anishinabek. We respect the cultures and
traditions of our Metis and Inuit brothers and sisters, but their issues are
different from ours."
Also, to quote Miranda who has brought up this point originally:
"For many reasons, I would recommend the word "Indigenous" over
"Aboriginal." Although Aboriginal is a common term in Canada (and is
a legal term), there is considerable backlack against it...for many
reasons, one of which is that it is an imposed term (imposed upon our
Indigenous Peoples by non-Indigenous Peoples). It is also a term that
suggests a pan-Indigenous approach (ie: assuming homogenous nature
across all of Canada's Indigenous Peoples)...
...This brings me to my second comment and question. The term
"Aboriginal" refers to Canada's three Indigenous populations (First
Nations, Métis and Inuit); however, your description seems First
Nations-specific. Will this group include solidarity work with Inuit
(there is a significant urban population in Ottawa) and Métis?
Solidarity work with Métis, I believe, will be few and far between
(particularly local initiatives), but this is a population that is so
often ignored and silenced that the few initiatives deserve our
support."
