*** Please Circulate Widely*** Event: Israeli Crimes, Canadian Complicity—A Panel Discussion with Al-Haq Human Rights Workers from the Occupied West BankWhen: Thursday October 23rd at 7:00pm Where: 101 Azrieli Theatre, Carleton UniversityIsrael has officially launched a public relations campaign to "Rebrand" its image, and is piloting this campaign on Canadian soil. The image Israel wants the world to see is at odds with the daily reality faced by millions of Palestinians living under military occupation. Justice requires that we understand the truth behind the "Rebranded" image of Israel, and where Canada fits into this equation. Please join us for a panel discussion led by human rights workers from Al-Haq, an independent Palestinian human rights organization based in the Occupied West Bank. This event will take place on Thursday October 23rd at 7:00pm, 101 Azrieli Theatre, Carleton University.Background:Al-Haq <http://www.alhaq.org/>is conducting a speaking tour across Canada to raise awareness and promote action on the legal issues surrounding the human rights situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT). The example of Canada Park, a park built on the ruins of destroyed Palestinian villages with money raised by the Jewish National Fund and subsidized by the Canadian Government, will be used as a starting point to explore key issues. These will include Israel's ongoing policy of forcibly displacing Palestinians, illegal Jewish-Israeli settlements, the Annexation Wall, and severe restrictions on Palestinian movement. The theme underpinning these issues is the intentional fragmentation of the Palestinian people, and the perpetual denial of their right to self-determination. Special attention will also be given to the continuing occupation of the Gaza Strip, the collective punishment of its civilian population and the resulting dire humanitarian situation. This analysis will be used to highlight Canada's obligations and responsibilities towards the civilian population of the OPT with respect to international law and Canada's role as a member of the United Nations. As well, Canada's specific governmental responsibility in relation to "Canada Park" and the responsibility of Canadian corporations involved in settlement construction will be discussed. This event is sponsored by:Human Rights Program—Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies, Carleton University Students Against Israeli Apartheid (SAIA-Carleton)Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights (SPHR-Ottawa)Not In Our Name: Jewish Voices Opposing Zionism (NION)Independent Jewish Voices (IJV)For more information please contact: saia.carleton at gmail.com
