Legal Synopsis of dealings between Ontario Provincial Government and
Algonquins (Ardoch and Sharbot Obadjiwan)
-for the past 10 years, the three parties have been involved in a land
claims process over land in Frontenac (land claims typically take 15-20
years)
-Frontenac Ventures Corportation bought the Subsurface rights to land in
Frontenac from the Prov. gov.(much of this the same unceded land of claim
process)
-there was no consultation between the Algonquins and Prov. gov at this
point.
-FVC began to "explore" land last year, so the Algonquins set up a blockade
on the Robertsville Mine site, blocking FVC access
-the FVC attempted to sue Algonquins for 700 million dollars
-judge ruled that Algonquins and settlers must take down blockade and
refrain from entering within 200m of Robertsville mine
-Ardoch stated that they did not recognize the authority of the
court. Requested (not for the first time) to meet with Dalton McGuinty to
negotiate with him directly
-FVC threatened to press contempt of court charges against those individuals
who remained on site post injunction (11people)

-Algonquins took the option to enter into 13 week mediation period
-at the 11th week, Algonquins agreed that drilling was a possible outcome of
the mediation process, and Prov. gov. agreed that no drilling was a possible
outcome of mediation
-The next day, Ont, had flipped and stated that no drilling after mediation
was not a possible outcome. At this point the mediations failed
-Contempt of court charges were pressed. Over the course of the week of Feb
10th, the Algonquins were tried. The settlers will have a seperate hearing
in March.

"I went to Kingston on Friday 15th, for the sentancing of Bob Lovelace and
Paula Sherman. We unfortunately missed the sentencing by ten minutes. I
walked in to hear the clapping, which I guess was Frontenac Ventures people.
On the other side, there were people crying, someone spat on the floor. . .
we went outside with signs to be there when they took Bob away, they had a
police cruiser drive to another entrance as a diversion, I guess so that Bob
wouldn't see the support he had? It was pretty stupid. Buuuuut . .
. somewhere in Kingston, a police paddy wagon is cruising around with a
lovely No Uranium sticker on the back.

-Ardoch, Shabot and Settler groups are still committed to opposing the mine.
Strategy meetings are taking place now.

*IPSMO Support*

beginning of March, Angela S will be attending to look into high school

-IPSMO will offer to get a space in atrium for OCAMU to have a table and
speak to Carleton students.
-Emma and Angela S will submit an article to Rostrum for Monday March 1

*Other Related Events*

New Sun Conference: Carleton, 5050 Minto Building, this Saturday (March 1)
9-4:30- AS will send e-mail about this

Death of A Chief at NAC- Matt K and Emma
-don't do it, it's not much of an adaptation, basically its Julius Ceasar in
a traditional Aboriginal costume, oh and Julius is a woman. There's a few
traditional Haida songs stuck in, but other than that it's just the same.

IPSMO field trip to National Archives?
-no one is sure exactly what is going on there, whether it's cool or whether
it's propaganda, but there's something showing and it will be there until
the end of March. Everyone is welcome. More details soon.
