Hey,
Ottawa City Council will be voting on the following tomorrow, Feb 27. It is
expected to take place between 10:30 and 11am at city hall. Participation is
not allowed, but presence means something.
3. Moratorium on Uranium Mineral Prospecting, Exploration and
Mining in Eastern Ontario
*COMMITTEE **RECOMMENDATIONS as amended ***
*That Council approve the following:***
* *
1. Petition the Province of Ontario and Premier Dalton McGuinty to
initiate an immediate moratorium on uranium mineral prospecting, exploration
and mining in Eastern Ontario and the Ottawa River watershed *until such a
time that all environmental and health issues related to Uranium mining are
resolved and that there are settlement plans for all related native land
claims*;
* *
*2. **That the City of Ottawa petition the Province of
Ontario to undertake an immediate comprehensive public review of the Mining
Act, 1990.*

*Info about attendence: "For those of you unfamiliar with council meetings,
anyone
from the public can attend the meetings (there is a large public
seating area). However, unless it is a special meeting item where
council is specifically seeking public consultation, members of the
public can not make presentations at the meeting. You also cannot
bring in placards or cheer or boo during the meeting. However, I've
found it is typical that if an item to be voted on is of key concern
to a particular interest group, people from that group usually attend
and make their affiliation known through such things as t-shirts. If
nothing else, it gives the councillors a visual reminder of the
support for and importance of a particular item. In those cases where
the item is really newsworthy, there are often interviews done by
media in the lobby adjoining the council chambers after a particular
item has been voted on. The media is fickle, but it isn't uncommon to
have good representation from the print, radio, and TV medias if they
think that some important and/or controversial items will be on the
meeting agenda."
