Hello,
I modified the text from the posters to make an e-mail call-out. Feel free
to use this to send it around to people you think might be interested. Just
so that we don't double up: it has already been sent to Carleton and Ottawa
U Aboriginal Student Assoc. as well as Carleton Development and Peace
(they're doing stuff on mining this year), OCAMU, and Ottawa U- PIRG.
Thanks,
Angela S

Uranium *
Uranium explores the consequences of uranium
mining in Canada. Because of toxic and radioactive
waste, there are profound, long-term environmental
hazards associated with uranium mining. For miners
who work at the sites, there is the substantially
increased risk of getting cancer. And, because most of
the mining to date has been on land historically used
by Canada's Native populations, uranium mining
violates the traditional economic and spiritual lives of
many aboriginal people. Given our limited knowledge
of the risks associated with uranium mining, this film
questions the validity of its continuation.
*Blockade: Algonquins Defend the Forest*
Blockade follows the Barriere Lake
Algonquins as they take on the
government and the logging industry in a
struggle to save their traditional hunting
grounds and way of life. In September,
1989, this small Native community
blockaded six new logging roads, calling
for a moratorium on logging and insisting
that the government address their
concerns. Filmed on location during the
period of the blockade, this film raises
important questions about our attitudes
toward the environment, the exploitation
of our natural resources and the rights
and treatment of Native people.
